I'd like to change things up a bit on my old Colt A2 H-BAR. I'm thinking A3 upper with a 11.5" barrel, rail system fore-end with a vertical grip, some sort of holograph sight + a flip up rear sight. Which one's can / should I use??? I want to keep the 20" upper fully usable for the days I feel like shooting some long range stuff ;) so I won't be scavenging any parts from it :D .

Thanks for any input!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but unfortunately it looks like you've got yourself a "large hole" upper on that Colt. So, if you want to put together an extra shorty upper for it, you'll need a large hole flattop - ie. like the ones Daniel Defence (sp?) makes. There was one for sale on the board a while back. I don't think any of the other major companies available in country (ie. Armalite, DPMS, Bushmaster, etc....) make a large hole flattop receiver, so you might have to look just that much harder. HTH's...

hsld.

In order to use a small pivot hole upper on your rifle, you will need an offset adapter pin to mate the two together. They run $6 - 8 or so from places like Wolverine Supplies.

That way any upper will work, not just the Daniel Defense models.

It'll work just fine with the offset pin. I've got a large hole Colt lower with a flattop 16" upper as well. I just don't take the upper off every time I clean the rifle. Just hinge it open like an FN/C1A1 and remove the bolt and charge handle. The offset pin works fine too. You may have to twist the pin a little to get proper alignment. It takes about 20sec max, when putting the upper and lower together  You can save up for a lower while you enjoy shooting your flat top :)
