I had an RCBS size 18 shell holder set aside in my computer room on the shelf, just too lazy to take it down to the reloading room. Anyways, there it sat waiting delivery of my new .270 Wby. Rifle is here and I go downstairs to set up the dies and start working up some loads - no #18 shell holder. Crap, I left it upstairs on the shelf in my computer room I say to myself. Come upstairs - no shell holder!! My little 5 yr. old daughter is constantly in and out of my den and guaranfreakingteed she took off with it and hid it somewheres - and likely has forgotten all about taking it let alone where she stuck it. Exactly the reason why I keep everything in my gun/reloading room under lock and key. My own fault for not taking the damn thing downstairs  .

Anyways, I'm on the look-out for 1, hopefully 2, #18 RCBS shell holders. I'll post in the EE but this also leads me to another question - what other shell holders should be okay to use? I've got a #1, #3, #4, #10 & #11 I believe. Is it a matter of if it fits, use it? Obviously I don't want too much play - especially when seating - but what ones might be okay to try?

Thx,
ILBR

Just had a look at my shelf downstairs. I've got sizes 1,2,3,4,6,8,10. The only one that is large enough to fit the .270 Wby case head is the #4 - will this be okay to use until I can lay hands on a #18?

The #4 is actually the recommended RCBS shellholder for the 270wby.

I just read the same thing off the RCBS website   . For the life of me I don't know why my RCBS die set box reads size 18 as the recommended shell holder. Typo on the box I guess - got myself all worked up for nothing. Good thing the little devil took the shellholder I'd probably least likely ever use  .

Thanks,
ILBR

It's probably a fairly old die box. Way back in the 60's the belted magnum case head wasn't quite standardised. European made (Norma/Weatherby) were slightly different than the US spec.

It's actually a newer plastic box, not one of the older cardboard ones. Very weird.

Yup, the No. 4 shell holder is correct.

Alternatively, a No. 26 is required for some of the standard belted Magnums with some European brass, like Norma/Lapua.

The No. 18 is for 44 Rem Mag. / 44 Spcl. !
