Has anyone gone out for black bear in Alberta yet? I have seen a lot of people posting trail cam photos but only one shot. This will be my first time hunting spring bear and I would have gone earlier as the dandelions seem to be out but won't have a chance till the 25th of May.

Do you guys think it may be too late to go the last weekend of May?

It will be a great time to go out.
I seen my first bear this spring about two weeks ago while working of course.
They should be cruising pretty hard for sows in heat then.
There is a slightly greater chance of them possibly having rubs in there hide by then but I wouldn't be overly concerned about it,
It certainly wouldn't stop me if that's when I was able to go.
Have a area in mind/scouted out?

Bear Smart reports sighting of a Black bear in my neighborhood. I'm keeping my eyes open. :) Usually some serious rubbing by the end of the month, but it's been an unusually cool spring, so who knows ?

I went to the Livingstone area (402) almost two weeks ago and there was still lots of snow on the ground. A little bit lower down in WMU 308 there was some greenery and plenty of deer. But no bear sign. Hopefully I get a chance to head out again soon; it should be a lot warmer now.

I was thinking Slave Lake area or athabasca area. Yea I mean it's the only time I can really go so I either take it or stay at home and don't risk it haha. I hope they stay around as it is a no bait zone so I'm not sure if that makes it easier.

Good place to start. :)

You guys actually like the taste of bear meat? Or just shooting them so you can tell your friends you shot a bear? What do you do with them after they are dead? Just asking because I'm a sustenance hunter.

Alberta law doesn't require a hunter to keep the meat, only the hide.

Mostly it's a great excuse to get out in the spring.
We have a very healthy bear population and are allowed two tags in most zones and they are cheap.
I seen 24 bears in 4 days on my last spring hunt and that was spot and stalk not over bait.
Bear can taste fantastic it largely depends what they have been feeding on.

Primarily to tell my friends.

OP: Good luck! Let us know what you see. I’ve been mulling over the same kind of hunt if I get a chance.

Was skeptical of the meat myself, until last spring went out with a buddy to help him fill his spring bear tag. The bear was so lean and the meat was great, even my kids loved it.
