well..... a while back we discussed the Safety of the Abolts, You guys said all of your guns have a Locked bolt when the Safety is on...
mine was not acting this way- but would never release the sear with the safety ON. bump testing and several multiple attempts to have it release to No avail.

fast forward to a scrub bashing mission this past weeekend, in between hunts i pulled my rifle apart, cleaned all the debris from my now non floating barrel and re assembled, re sighted a packed in the next morning.... in doing so i noted one Specific.

this specific involves the Safety, all of it, including the Rod which slides up and down in the Pin hole slot of the Bolt housing.......... thus to lock your bolt down when safety is ON.

well, mine wasnt in the Hole.. an i figured, if you cut that Rod down a few MMs, it "wont do sch#t" an the bolt handle will be able to Come up an act as a 3 position safety of sorts, Being able to Run a Round in the Chamber , the Bolt UP and safety on ... The Bolt will not Slip backwards an eject your cartridge.

if you wish to try this without cutting the Rod, just align everything, but the Rod in the hole, have it sit to the Side an Rear of the hole for testing.... :)

im on the fence...im thinkin about cutting mine as i liked how it felt safer with Safety all on an locked up, but the Bolt also up....

whatt about it

I prefer the way it was designed and have the bolt locked. It’s a quick easy check to ensure it is in “safe” mode, but also don’t have to worry about loosing ammo if the bolt opens getting tangled in bushes or anything.

with the mod, the bolt wouldnt open , as so now, but the handle can come up.
i forgot to check it if it popped back off pressure to the cartridge base/ lock up. next time i pull it apart il sus it.

Whelenlad - is a possibility that the bolt was needed to be ALL the way closed when rifle is fired? My Dad ran into similar with M1917 that he acquired in 1948 - had slipped off the safety - which also locks the bolt "down" on that rifle - had a "real good" white tail buck, he said - took a few steps and bumped the bolt handle slightly "up" - is a stem on front of that M1917 sear - needs to slide up into slot on bolt body to release that sear - slot is not aligned when bolt handle slightly lifted - so can not fire that thing unless bolt is fully closed. Is similar on Mauser m93, Swede m96 - similar function on Mauser m98, but done with "wings" on firing pin - inside the bolt body - will not fire properly, if the bolt is lifted slightly - I have never played with A-Bolt - so I have no clue if similar or not - note that M1917 has "helical breeching" whereas most Mausers did not have that - but bolt typically needs to be 100% closed for rifle to fire - often done by the safety mechanism, but was a "fall back" system in place in "old days", where a soldier of the day expected to be able to mess up most any system ...

i dunno, but to me, it feels safer and better to Raise the Bolt with the Safety "ON" an then releasing Safety to OFF so i can slide bolt back and eject rounds.

I dont like the Fact you have to have the Gun safety OFF to cycle the bolt just to remove ammo etc.

i may Change this back to "modified" again soon.

It’s not a rem 700, it won’t go off on its own

lol, im lookin into the mechanisms of the browning as per discussion with CGN'r about the different types an whats actually Actuating what or Not.

but yyeah.. interesting. do alot of empty chamber testing one day soon

You Bogans love your bolt up artificial safety, don't you?

ha ha yeah many of Us do actually, these Sambar an the way 90% of people hunt them is Walk an stalk, or you guys may call it a "Still hunting" Stalk..... to cycle a bolt from empty or open ensures no meat makes the freezer almost ever, as its tight close range stuff.
open country, gulleys and face to face is different, we carry different here, often empty chamber.

for every other time, alot of people rely on the safety switch an one up the spout...
