how common are they? i've wanted a .45ACP wheel gun for a while, and prefer this later model over the earlier M1917 type, no brass to chase and quick to reload with the moon/half moon clips. so what would i expect to pay for a decent one?

I cut this from the EE. Contact 7x61

I had a S&W 25-2 [Model of 1955 Target] in .45ACP with the 6 1/2" factory pinned barrel. Was very accurate & a pleasure to shoot both with .45ACP in moon clips as well as .45 Auto Rim reloads. Sorry I sold it.... :(

You'll probably pay minimum $650 & up if you can find one now in any kind of reasonable condition.

The Model 25-2 is a fine gun. Expect to pay a premium for one in mint condition. Here is mine with the 6 1/2in. barrel.

If you are looking for a .45 ACP SW, try finding a Brazilian .45 ACP SW revolver. This was the last model Model 1917 made. Century/Lever Arms sold lots of them in the 1970's...............everyone was in VG+++ shape

I had one a while ago, was very accurate but I prefer K frames over N frames. It's a big gun! I would have some difficulty putting a price on it but I would think at least $800 for a nice one.
