I'm thinking of picking up a bolt action rimfire that will be used for target shooting at 20-50 yards and shillotte shooting. The thing is I want a decent set of peep sights. While a walther KK-100 would be nice I'm thinking more along the $400 dollar range as these are friendly competitions and I can't shoot that good anyway:D :D

I was looking at a savage single shot fvt or mark 2 fvt repeater.

anyone shoot one of these or have any other suggestions? Are the rear apetures a standard thread so they can be upgraded with an aftermarket smaller aperture or even an adjustabel one? Are they micrometer adjustments? Any advantage of the single shot over the repeater??

Thanks for any help

Read down in the looking for target thread and that will tell you what
you want to know. You can pick up a Brno-cheaper anschutz 180-190
that will more than server you purpose much better than a savage. Just
takes a little time and looking around, they pop up., but 400 is pushing on
the low side.

Get a used Brno model 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. They're not too terribly hard to find...

I'm partial to the model threes & fours (target version with a "28 bull barrel) myself. Picked one up for $425 with a complete set of both tangent and peep sights.

Absolutely rock solid tack driver, built better than most centrefire rifles I've seen too!

As for new stuff, well, a CZ 452 would be great, but it would be a little above your price range, especially once you get a good set of peeps for it...

I got the Savage FVT. Nice rifle.
I had the Lapua Club doing pretty good @ 50yds. To my amazement the Yellow jackets grouped well too. The remington Bulk were in there .
The rest grouped like in my other rimfires. The wife got her hands on it....
It stabilized the 60grainer with a clean bbl. It failed to do so towards the end of the session - with a fouled bore.
I am pleased with it.
I'll try more ammo and we'll see. I slapped a scope on it, to see what can it do, trying to elliminate the operator error. It looked I did more harm than good, because My scope doesn't have AO , so I'll retest it with irons.
The Accutrigger comes with minimum adj, from the factory, so no need to tune it.
I got a TOZ 78 and I'll compare them as soon as the weather wil promise me lesser winds.

I'd like to see the comparision between the toz and the savage. I'm not a big fan of buying used so I'd like to stick with something new. If I was going to get more serious about it I would invest some money in a biathalon rifle. I really want open sights and decent ones at that. At minimum accurate reliable adjustments. That way I can upgade the apature if I want. If this rifle will print pretty good groups from the bench than factoring in shooting offhand with sights I wont be able to beat average accuracy.

But than again why buy a heavy barrel rifle if a sporter version will shoot just as good. I was hoping the heavy barrel would mean an increase in accuracy but if they group like any other rimfire than I might not go this route.

Thanks guys.

took out the Savage FVT ant the TOZ 98 out for a first spin (TOZ').

I took the wife and the kid to the range, so we played a littel with the resetable targets. One - lift them up, the other- knock them down.

I didn't put any high quality ammo thru today, because we were too busy playing and serious range work asks for serious time. BUT... it was rarely I missed the target. I used Federal HP 40gr for all.
the TOZ comes with sights from 25 to 100 yds (or meters, not sure) I cracked some 10 shots @100, but it was toward the end of the day and it was fairly dark. they grouped into an orange, but I shot them fast and from sitting... no sandbags.

No hicups, just the roughness of the a new rifle. I think it is worth giving it a good try with proper ammo, see what we get. I am by no means a very good shooter, but I had the feeling this rifle will shoot at least as good as I can, so.... Definately a keeper.

I'll post an adequate range report when I get some hours at the range - alone.
