Hello there,


I am interested in getting involved in target shooting beyond the 100 yard range with my Ruger 10/22. Target shooting is all I am interested in currently, I won't be hunting with the unit in question.

I would be using a stock Ruger 10/22 with CCI mini mag target ammo.

I am interested to shoot in and around the 300 to 500 range up at Borden when things open up this summer.

Any comments, suggestions, recommendation would be greatly appreciated.
 
That's a lofty goal.

Have you ever shoot any rimfire or centerfire rifles out to 300 or 600 yards ?

How does it shoot at 100yds ?

That should give you a good idea if 300 is possible.

Do you have a scope that has enough elevation to shoot to 300 or 600 ?

Hello there,

at the 100 yard target, I am getting 6-7 inch groups sitting and resting on the bench, with iron sights. Never had the opportunity beyond 100 yard. I haven't purchased any optics as I write, I was hoping for suggestions and directions. I know anything beyond the 200 yard range maybe a stretch due to the power of the .22lr, as such I am seeking advise before I go out to purchase optics.

I fig if the combination works, I can shoot all day and night and not worry about the BS ban or the cost of ammo. There should be enough power to make an indentation on the target at 300 yards?

At 300 yards, the CCI Mini-Mag bullet, which you referred to in the OP, will be moving around 784 fps with 55 foot pounds of energy (40 grains). Still enough to be deadly.

You can shoot a 22 as far as you like. For me, the maximum effective range is about 100 yds. If sighted in at 50 yds, you'll be about 5" low at 100 yds. You can estimate 5", but any more drop than that is just plinking for the fun of it unless you zero for a longer range

There are other members that talk of switching barrels and all. I intend to add optics only, your comments on this topic?
 
Give me a shout... routinely shoot out to 400yd with my set up.

I compete in CRPS as well and this has many targets from 250 to 300m

The factory barrel is not likely to get the job done. Mine use custom spec match barrels. Optics will also need a huge amount of travel... can help with the base, rings and scopes to reach way out there.
