I happened to see the end of a program the other night about the U.S. forces testing a new rifle and new caliber (slightly smaller than 50 cal) sniper rifle and the cold bore shot at 2500 yards. What was the caliber called, and what was the spotting scope; they could see the holes at that distance???? Thanks Bill.

Questar was planning on brniging some Barret rifles chambered in ".416" but:

"We have been informed by the RCMP that the Barrett Model 99-416 has been identified as a "variant" of the Model 90 and therefore classified as a "Prohibited Firearm" in Canada... this obviously terminates any civilian orders that were pending... law enforcement deliveries are of course still available."...Questar

Actually the round was the 416 Barrett and the host shot against one of Barrett's long range shooting instructors. From Barrett's web site:

What muzzle velocity should I expect with .416 Barrett ammo? The Barrett Model 99 32” barrel chambered for .416 Barrett fires a 400 grain machine-turned solid brass ball projectile at approximately 3250 fps.

What is a .416 Barrett cartridge? The .416 Barrett cartridge uses the same bolt face as a .50 BMG. It fires a .416 diameter bullet. The case is of proprietary dimension and is not simply a necked-down .50 BMG.

I tried to explain the 'hollywoodness' of those shots on The Unit to my wife...

What was the scope power, 50X? I think they were at 2000yds or something (or was it 1000?), but the guys looked like they were at 50 yards with a set of 7x binoculars. A little hokey all around, but still a good show!

That episode in particular was really hokey..."come on men, do you want to live forever!!"....but I agree it's a good show. I look forward to watching it every week.

Does anybody know how M99-416 differs from M99-50BMG ?

M99-50BMG is non restricted. So what's so different on M99-416?

No freaking kidding! That part kinda made me chuckle. Like the show otherwise, but that part was just dumb.
The range was 2300 yards (I think they were ripping off the CF sniper's shot, but were respectful enough to not say "2400m"). They probably had something like 50x scopes, and the reticles were perfectly still. Not to mention they calculated range, wind, barometric pressure, and relative humidity all in a matter of 30 seconds. Oh and the rounds always went exactly where they wanted. Still a good show though!

I recently saw the episode of Future Weapons that started this thread where they feature the new Barret sniper rifle?

Instead of going bigger, they went smaller to reach out past 2500m with a cold bore shot.

We all know about the 50cal but they went to the smaller 416, redesigned the projectile and the powder to keep the round going subsonic for longer.

It was pretty interesting to see.

ive shot the 338 at 1 mile. you need good glass allright
You don't need something that big to shoot accurately at 1 mile, but you would if you wanted to kill cleanly. I guess.
My 300WSM match rifle was built to shoot out that far, and does well.
It's just not as macho I guess.

I have a 1-mile range on my neghbour's hay fields. I've shot 6BR's at a mile with 105 bullets and kept all shots on a 14" steel gong. Hitting it was no problem... adjusting the scope until the shots were hitting it was another matter altogether. Bit hard to see bullet impact in the weeds.
