Hi all,
I am considering a precision or varmit rifle and was looking for opinions on barrel lenght and caliber. I have a thing for short barreled rifle and was wondering how much accuracy is lost with shorter barrels, say 20" vs. 24" or 26" @ 500yds. or more? Also, as I have a couple of .223's and a bunch of ammo so how much accuracy is lost with a .223 over say a .308 which would be my second choice (decent cost for factory ammo) or a .243? Looking at a Savage model 10 or 12 (best bang for the buck).
Thanks, rwj777

barrel length does not determine accuracy, just potential max velocity. The longer the barrel, the higher the potential velocity. Out to 26", any action will work just fine.

ALL cals can be equally accurate. We have never had better bullets and barrel makers. Just pick the one that interests you. Most popular are the 6mm and 6.5mm but the 22 and 7mm are also superb.

Unless there is a class you want to compete in, the 308 offers little advantage to all the other popular cartridges used in target shooting today. visit 6mmBR.com for lots of options.

If you don't mind spending a bit of time reloading, hard to beat the 6BR for the type of plinking you are thinking about. However, this will up the project cost alot as you need a barrel.

It is really hard to do better then the Savage varmint line for performance vs bucks spent. The 243 is a superb cartridge and can do both the paper and fur punching really well.

That would be my choice....;.

Up to 6oo yds dont worry about the barrel length. Quite often shorter is more accurate.
For what you are using it for, .223 or .243 for bigger varmints.
Its pretty hard to top the 243 all round. shoots flat, high velocity. Heavier bullets available. 24"would be fine.
