I was at the range sighting in my new 1022 and the accuracy was bad. I couldn't get 5 shots in a one inch group at 25 yds. I have a bushnell banner 3-9 scope and was using remington hyper velocity viper ammo. I'm going back again with different ammo to try for a different result. What kind of accuracy can I expect from an out of the box 1022?

try some standard velocity, or something other than expensive hunting bullets. have to rule out the ammo before the gun. heard a few people recommend against using hyper velocity ammo in a semi of any kind.

First thing I would try would be taking off the barrel band I know that cut my group size in half. You should have no problems shooting under an inch at 25. Try some winchester power point 40 grain bullets they seem to be the most reliable "cheap" 22 ammo I have found and I think I tried everything. I never found rem yellow jackets to shoot worth a damn.

here is my ruger's results from one of the first times I shot it.

10 shot groups
Gun= bone stock ruger 10/22T
Scope= tasco 9-24 (was set on 16 power for test)
Distance= 29yards
Position= bench rest using a harris bipod
Wind= little to none
Other= Cleaned gun after every 10 shots which coincided with an ammo brand change

I remember me shootng side-by-side with one brand new Ruger 1022 owner. At 20 yards my off-hand groups were far better than his off-the bench ones. Needles to say the guy was thouroughly pi$$ed.

accuracy

I bought a carbine with the intent of seeing how accurate a 10/22 could be made with very few aftermarket components. The only thing that isn't stock is the Rimfire Technologies bedding kit. Trigger was fixed, barrel was crowned and rechambered. Here are some examples of how well they can shoot with some work. These are 50 yd targets. This gun loves Xperts and should be deadly in gopher season.

I recently shot some 100 yard groups on a calm morning and had 2 groups where I had 4 rounds touching and then a flier. Sometimes they are not great from the factory, but can be turned into a great shooter with some work.

Hyper Velocity Ammo is never ment to group well. If your concerned about accuracy I'd go with High Velocity ammo or even better, standard velocity.

Wow!

I hate to be the one to say it....but...

For bench rest shooting with a scoped .22 at 29 yards, there isn't an acceptable group in the picture.

If it was 50 yards and all were like "I", then maybe....

There appears to be more problems than just the ammo.

Here are my findings with my rugers over the years.
Standard 10-22
all were somewhat ammo picky, but not real accurate.
If I shot under 1/2" group indoors at 20 yds., I was proud. (and I am not a horrible shooter)
Seemed to shoot the hot rod rounds better.

10-22 T Stainless hammered barrel
Very ammo picky (tried at least 8 different)
Loved Ely, and Am Eagle 38gr. hp.
Do NOT shoot Stingers, will not work in match chamber
Would one hole (and not a ragged big one) at 20 yds. indoor.
Did not like being clean. You could clean it and watch it walk into the POA for the first 5rounds after cleaning.
(kinda wish I had not sold that one....:) )

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm back to the range on Monday with a bunch of new ammo to try. I'll also take the barrel band off.
