What type of accuracy can you expect on a .223 round in semi auto vs bolt action from 100-300 yards? In general, whats considered good (good for the class of rifle your using)?

Any recommendations?

I know this is a very very large and specific topic. I'm only looking for a general
reply or examples of what you guys are achieving.

there are some impressive semi's out claiming sub moa (AR's no less, stag 6r and rra varmit to name a couple) , and certainly sub moa is attainable in bolt gun configurations.

depends entirely on the quality of the gun, the ammo and the shooter. Mini 14's group about a foot+ at 300M,DCM's can shoot sub MOA. Typical factory bolt guns are anywhere from 2MOA to .5MOA. Customized rifles with hand loads get groups half of that.

In my class of shooting, .1-.2MOA is considered good.

What do you want recommendations for?

I want to get a target rifle to shoot up to 300yards, but I have no idea what to get.

I have an XCR in 7.62x39 that I consider more of a fun power plinker. I'm thinking of getting the 5.56 conversion kit for it, as .223 ammo is probably more accurate than mil surplus ammo, especially if I decide to get into hand loading.

I'm generally just trying to gather as much info as I can, and hopefully I'll figure out what to buy.

I have not owned and xcr (yet), but based on all the reading I have done on the XCR (by owners), the XCR conversion should easily get you sub 2moa, maybe moa and that is very appropriator for 300yd shooting, although not considered "precision". Hand loads or match grade ammo, and maybe some basic tuning should see moa or perhaps sub moa, which is probably more than adequate until YOU can shoot sub moa. ;)

Otherwise, a near or sub moa bolt gun can usually be had for less than 1K.

If you already have an XCR go with the bolt action. It is not hard or expensive to get a rifle that shoots sub MOA. Savage has plenty of rifles that are up to the task and you have the ability to swap the barrel for a heavy match grade barrel if you ever want to really start shooting! This way you are already comfortable with the rifle and trigger. Parts are everywhere and plentiful.
