I'm thinking of buying either a 22LR, 17HMR, 17HM2 or 22WMR bolt action rifle this spring. Probably a CZ 452 with a scope. Most I'd ever do with it is shoot gophers and punch paper. I've been checking the price of ammo, and it doesn't look like there is a significant difference in price between 17HMR and 22WMR, something like a range of $9.00 to $16.00 a box for the various loads. It looks like the 17HM2 is the cheapest of the three, at around $5.00 a box. Am I on the right track here for figuring price of ammo? Are any of them being phased out or short in supply? Is there a significant difference in accuracy between 17HM2, 17HMR and 22WMR at say 100 yards? Is it a matter of flip a coin, you can't go wrong? How much better is 17HM2 at splitting a gopher in two at say 75 yards compared to a hot 22LR hollow point? Or will I be disappointed in the difference?
