accuracy tips

Real good suggestions above. For many people, the "boom" is what is making them "flinch", not the actual recoil - so always wear good hearing protection when at the range. An excellent drill suggested above - buddy either does or does not load a live round - you can B.S. as much as you want to other people, but you will see what your cross hair does when the rifle goes "click". You want to see exactly where the cross hairs are when the rifle fires - only way you will ever "call your shot". I see many people all hunched up over a rifle on a shooting table - take the time to get your bags or rests higher - you want to sit as erect as you can - sort of replicating your positioning with an off hand shot - hunched over, leaning forward on a rifle that is set up too low for you significantly accentuates recoil.

My guns don't kick particularly hard I think it is mostly in experience. I could be wrong but think it more likely coming from my perfectionist tendency. I want to get the perfect shot so I over think it.

Remember you are hunting and not target shooting so you are not looking for the "perfect" shot here.

Shooting a .22 will only teach you that a .22 doesn’t kick. Most people already know that.

Recoil is largely mental. This can be proven by people getting used to it. They never got a callus on their shoulder or grew some armour plate, but somehow they magically discover that their rifle just isn’t that big of a deal anymore. Thats because it wasn’t a big deal in the first place. Face it, a typical 270, 308, 30-06 etal can barely muster enough recoil to bounce on a sand bag. Trouble is; your subconscious mind hasn’t figured that out yet. It doesn't help if your conscious mind has decided that a .308 was a near death experience and self-help group and go fund me page to pay for the therapy has been started.

I’d suggest digging out your 12 gauge and some heavy or slug loads, a rifle with African level recoil, or anything that can show you what recoil really is. That will reset your perspective what recoil isn’t. Namely; it isnt a big deal. Its not going to kill you.
