Shooting a .22 will only teach you that a .22 doesn’t kick. Most people already know that.
Recoil is largely mental. This can be proven by people getting used to it. They never got a callus on their shoulder or grew some armour plate, but somehow they magically discover that their rifle just isn’t that big of a deal anymore. Thats because it wasn’t a big deal in the first place. Face it, a typical 270, 308, 30-06 etal can barely muster enough recoil to bounce on a sand bag. Trouble is; your subconscious mind hasn’t figured that out yet. It doesn't help if your conscious mind has decided that a .308 was a near death experience and self-help group and go fund me page to pay for the therapy has been started.
I’d suggest digging out your 12 gauge and some heavy or slug loads, a rifle with African level recoil, or anything that can show you what recoil really is. That will reset your perspective what recoil isn’t. Namely; it isnt a big deal. Its not going to kill you.
