Well, I've been looking just about everywhere for some loading data on this powder, can't find anything!

I purchased this powder because it came in an 8lb container, not the cheapest stuff i might add. I went to their website and checked out their data, but could not find No.9 powder for reloading 45acp with any kind of bullet.

what i would like to load:

200 grain/230grain
SWC
Lead cast bullets
45 acp
loading moderately, for IDPA, target shooting

can anyone help me? or do i have to flush this stuff down the toilet? :(

What is the best powder for loading 9mm and 45acp ammo? by best, i mean the most load data for different types of bullets.

any help is greatly appreciated!

AA No.9 is basically the same as H110 and Win 296, used for full power magnum pistol loads, I doubt that you will find anything for 45 ACP with it. But it does give you a reason to buy a 44 Mag. now.

damn :( i just started reloading (or about to) and when i saw this 8lb container i just couldn't help myself and bought it. There are sooooo many different types of powders, it's confusing, i just dont know which is best to use for 9mm and 45acp.

anyone want to buy my AA#9 powder? 8 full lbs ! $180 if you live in calgary.

well, on to search for another powder.

well you could start at 3 grains and work up and see what happens and use one of those speed things that tells you the speed of a bullet, and when yo8u get it up to ipsc levels than be happy, you have found the right load

Looked thru every reloading manual i had. Nothing. Lots of lead data for AA #2, # 5, #7. No AA #9. Get some Titegroup or W231. Good Luck.

titegroup. pick the right bullet weights, and you can use the same charge for both cartridges. Go to you reloading manual - you need at least two - and see what I'm talking about. If you don't have one, stop everything and go get one.

As for AA#9, I once worked up a load for it in .45acp. I'm not going to reveal the numbers, because a chrony showed the velocities all over the map, indicated wild pressure variations - as the AA rep suggested might happen. It's too slow for .45acp.

I'll echo that it's to slow, I use 13.2 grains behind a 200gr XTP in 10mm. It's likely fairly compressed. FWIW I get about 1150-75 fps. You'd have to be nuts to put that anything near that charge in a .45 Auto case.

Oh man.... Do you reload???

damn powder. i swear there are as many powders for reloading as there are protein powders for weight training lol.

i have 2 loading manuals, Hornady and Lyman, i see that "unique" "700x", and bullseye are fairly popular (thanks bjhill).

i guess i am just looking for the most velocity with the least charge, without loading it too hot. being new to this, i'm going to start off at the low end and work up like some of you suggested.

I see some of these loads with a start velocity of just over 600fps, i've heard there are bb rifles that shoot faster than that.

what's the lightest load anyone has ever done here? could you see the bullet? ;)

cheers guys,
florin

"...because it came in an 8lb container..." You should never buy powder in quantity until you have a load worked up.
No. 9 powder is too slow for the .45 ACP or 9mm. You'll just have to go buy a .357 or .44 Mag revolver.

231 is a great powder for 45... you can also use power pistol or titegroup...

I don't like bullseye for anything I find it very dirty...

yup, i just wanted to get as much as possible, i wasn't aware that this acc no9 was no good (for what i wanted to load). just came back from wholesale with 8lbs of Unique powder, since i can find the loads very easily in 9mm and 45 acp.

yesss!

another question for you guys - in the loading manuals it doesn't show every kind of bullet, only a few fmj's and a couple led cast bullet sizes. if i don't have the exact bullet but same weight and diameter, is the load going to vary much?

thanks!

should not be to much of a difference, i buy factory with different bullets and weights and i can keep it on target. but usually i get 230 grain ammo and stick with that

Get a burning rate chart(online or otherwise). Lyman, and others show loads for bullseye to unique because they are best for fat(large diameter) soft (lead) bullets with cases which have relatively small case capacity. If IDPA requires a major power factor(approx 830 fps with 230 gn), then slowly work up to that level. Cartridge OAL is critical for feeding(varies with shape of bullet nose), and seating to deep will skyrocket the pressure, even with a light load. Read all the manual.

In IDPA he has a choice. He can shoot his .45 in ESP. The power factor in ESP is 125. So he can shoot a 230 grain bullet at 550 fps. You should be able to see thet one going down range. He can also shoot his .45 in CDP, Power factor 165, So he will have to speed his 230 grain bullet to about 730fps.
A nice powder for the .45 is Winchester super Target.
All the best with the IDPA.

I thought .45 was autmatically in CDP. could be wrong.

Also I would reccomend WW231/HP38 and unique as good newbie powders for those loading .45acp for the first time. Both have a wealth of load data.

FWIW my IDPA/ODPL CDP load is a 200 gr SWC lead infront of 5.6 grains of WW231 for a power factor of about 170 from my 5" 1911. I still use 231 even though i have tryed other powders. It may be a little dirty and smoky but is reliable, consistant and very accurate (see post in handgun forum - 25 yard targets). Plus i clean my guns after every trip to the range.

sorry for not giving out that info! i am reloading for a Colt 1911 government model. I also have a colt gold cup trophy. I'm guessing the colt gold cup i have will be more picky with reloaded ammo, but i haven't used it yet with reloads.
