First time working with this powder. Im shooting a Kriss Vector 10mm carbine, I found 2 good accuracy nodes at 13.3 and 13.8 grains with hornady fmj's 180 grain, starline brass, federal LP primers. Both loads are under hornady 11th edition max. I use the lyman gen6 powder dispensor and calibrate it before each loading session.

Primers still have roundness to them, the brass has some soot on it but im not worried about that,
The action has quite a bit of smoke coming out of the ejection port and even the mag has smoke coming out when I drop it after only 5 rounds ! Im not doing quick mag dumps or anything...is this normal for the powder? Could it be a bi-product of the strange blowback action? or a mix of the two?

The rounds are cooking fast though, 1527 and 1590 fps averages for the loads. Both sub 1.5 moa 5 shot groups at 50 yards, Can probably shrink that down once I get use to the long heavy trigger squeeze. ( im used to Tikka's with mcarbo springs and trigger tech triggers on my bolt actions)

That's one of my favourite powders. It's a good choice but not the very best in 10mm. Your vector should do about 1800fps (I assume it's 18.6") with a proper max load and a 180grn bullet. As far as the smoke the higher charge may produce a cleaner burn but I would really suggest just not worrying about it.

Awsome , thanks for the reply, I'll try creeping up a bit and see if that cleans things up

OP,
There are 2 formula's of #9 powder-

Accurate Arms #9 powder (McEwen,TN) is a ball powder.

Accurate #9 powder(MilesCity,MT) is a double base powder.

The latter is slightly faster burn rate than the original formula.

Now that Hodgdon is bottling the above,it's anybodies guess what concoction is in the container.

I would venture a guess, that your chamber is large, causing the gas blow by.
Case head separation will happen after a couple reloads.

Cutting primer pocket depth for use of a rifle primer may help, when you start blanking/piercing primers.

^ the last bit is some real nonsense. Sooty cases and smoky actions can be "normal" and are almost certainly nothing that dramatic. Your suggestion about primers is one of the dumbest things I have heard when talking a cartridge like 10mm Auto.

Keep shooting your TupperWare & you'll never know what the 10mm Auto is capable of.
