Good morning to all you CGN HW97K airgunners.

From your experience with your 97Ks, may I request a list of your best recommendation for the top three pellets, each, for the HW97K in .22 and .177. Brand/model/diameter/weight details would be really appreciated. Hopefully they would be available from the CAF Store. I would like to order a total of 6 tins (500 pellets per tin) to make shipping worthwhile.

As well, please take into account that I am probably the king of cheap, so price per 500 tin would preferably be south of $12-13.

I have about 700 shots on the .22 and 600 on the .177.

I tried the cheapest pellets that some people said were accurate or somewhat in their HW97. These were the Crosman Premier Hollow Points in both calibers, the Crosman Ultra Magnum, Benjamin Discovery .22 and the .177 Field and Target Pointed, that internet reasearch said compared well with other brands. The best i could do was about 1.5-inch 5-shot groups at 17 meters using a Zero Caldwell rest. Most of the groups were in the 2-inch range. That's the farthest distance at our indoor range in Port Coquitlam.

At the same range, on a good day (for me that means enough sleep, no hangover, one cup of coffee) my CZ452 Scout and Savage MKIGY could do one-hole groups, roughly, big half inch diameter holes, using Winchester Xpert 333 bulk. Handheld, elbow resting on bench. They'd probably shoot better on a rest.

Eventually I would like to shoot outdoors again, range up to 50 meters. So I'd like pellets that would be accurate to 50 meters, but I'd be happy if I could group 1/2" at 25 meters.

The pellets will be mostly for target practice, so terminal ballistics are not as important as accuracy.

Thank you in advance.

Stop using the rest and you're accuracy will improve. If you must use a rest try a soft bag for the forearm at most.

JSB exacts are usually a good match for the Weihrauch. I can't help with your cheapskate problem. Just like powderburners if you want good ammo you have to pay for it.

Can't even help myself:)

What diameter JSB Exacts are you using on your 97s?

You just need to try a bunch, some shops sell mixes so you don't have to buy 500 of each type. You also need to learn what hold("Artillery hold") or where to rest the gun so it works best with a springer.
Princess Auto sometimes has JSB's.

I use JSB Exact 4.52mm in my .177 Hw 97 KT.
If you are using a rest put your hand under the forearm of the rifle and put your hand on the rest.
Don't grip the forearm of the rifle and don't pull it into your shoulder.
Let the rifle recoil freely.
In order to be accurate with a springer you must hold the rifle lightly, and exactly the same EVERY time.
Don't be cheap with your pellet purchases, spingers are hard enough to shoot accurately and consistantly even with good pellets.
JMHO

I also use 4.52 jsb exacts in my 97. I used premiers because I have a crapload of them but the jsb exacts work a bit better so I switched. I personally wouldnt use the big heavy pellets in a springer- I find they tend to work better in the pcps.

HW97's in .22 (and some of the other HW models) are often reported to need a bit wider-than-usual pellets. I found through a lot of trial and error, and learned also from reading, that H&N Field Target Trophy pellets in 5.55 and 5.54 mm head size are what respond well in that air rifle. No other pellets were near as accurate. I used the 5.55mm FTT pellets in my HW97 .22 with excellent results. My HW95 preferred H&N FTT 5.54mm pellets. They can be found at D&L Airguns and Specialty Shooting Sports.

In the .177, I had an HW77k, which is very similar to the HW97k, and it's most accurate pellet was the H&N FTT 4.50mm pellet. JSB Exact pellets are often good, too.

JSB 4.52 Exact for .177 and H&N 4.50 FTT ...check..

5.55 H&N FTT for .22 cal...check. Two more?

I'll look at online retailers for "mixed" cans.

thanks

edit: I just checked our local Princess Auto. They got some JSB Diabolo Exact 4.50 but not the 4.52. At 19.99$ per 500 tin I think I'll pass on this probably undersize spec pellet.

Try a tin of 5.5's and a tin of 5.51's and go from there.
D&L is in the Valley so not to far to ship and Specialty is also in BC and have some discount pellets and mixed bags.

Thanks for the above advice gentlemen.

So now am putting together an order of H&Ns and JSBs from DLairgun and/or to CAF Store (no H&N).

Got a couple more questions:

The JSB Exact 452 tin from CAF says JSB Match Diabolo Exact.

The JSB Exact 452 tin from DLAirgun says Cometa Exact Carefully Selected by JSB.

Please excuse my ignorance but what's with the Cometa brand? Are they produced by "Cometa" for JSB? I am confused by this branding game.

thanks unicorn and jzz.

Valken looks very interesting although they don't state the diameter. Reviews say they are only accurate at shorter ranges, i.e. 30m or less, but that's far enough for my type of shooting at this time

Ok gentlemen, I just ordered these from CAF Store. Shipping and insurance to BC was $22.00 instead of the $40, default shipping on their website, and no tax as well. Not bad. Thanks for all your advice. Will update whenever.

1 x JSB Diabolo Exact Jumbo Express .22 /5.52/250
1 x JSB Diabolo Exact .177/4.51/500
1 x JSB Diabolo Exact Jumbo RS .22/5.52/500
1 x JSB Diabolo Exact .177/4.52/500
1 x JSB Diabolo Exact .177/4.53/500
1 x JSB Match Diabolo Rifle .177/4.52/500

If they don't make these two bad boys happy, I'll get some H&N FTTs from DLairguns. May even try the cheapo Valkens from Amazon:), perfect for my style and budget.

After having tried the Noricas I have to admit I am impressed. Not terribly heavy pellets but who am I to argue if they group. Very consistent and in my mind a huge bargain given the amazon price.

Quick Update.

JSB pellets from CAF Store arrived the other week and only had time to shoot a 4-shot 10 meter group with the HW97 .177 using the JSB Exact 4.52, support arm rested on table, the other day. The first shot was a flyer as I jerked the trigger. But the next three shots grouped into one large hole. With these first shots, I am very happy now with my .177 HW97. :d

Hope to try the other diameters as well as the .22 soon.

Also ordered some Noricas, because I'd really like to shoot cheap ammo, if they are accurate enough to 17 meters.
