Accurizing a H&R

Anyone know of some simply ways to accurize one of these rifles?
Been trying to load for my 25-06 Ultra Hunter, to get some accuracy but only manage 1-1/2 groups at 100yrds. Is this as good as it get for these guns?

Does anyone have any experience with the Limbsaver Barrel De-resonators? Are they finicky? Easy to use?

What kind of loads are YOU guys using? I am trying to load lighter bullets like 90 sierras gamekings. Went to the range on saturday and fired some test rounds. 54grns of imr4350 came up with a little better than 1-1/2" group. Not bad, i guess, but i want better!

You'll get more info if you post this on the Gunsmithing forum. However, have you done a trigger job? Factory triggers tend to be like 5 miles of bad road and heavy.
You need to work up the load, not just pick one. Mind you, 1.5" at 100 will do nicely for deer sized game.
Beginning with the starting load, load 5 rounds only. Go up by half a grain of powder, loading 5 of each keeping them separate until you get to the max load in your manual.
Then go shooting. Shoot at 100 yards, for group only, slowly and deliberately off a bench.
Change targets between strings of 5 and allow time for the barrel to cool.
When you find the best group, sight in 4.5" high at 100. That'll put you on target out to about 250 yards with no hold over.
A 100 grain bullet drops 9" at 300 with a 150 yard zero.
 
Though I do like handi's some times 1.5 is all you will get from them but yes some shoot half that or better.

One quick thing is lots of hadis shoot better if supported off of the foreend close to the hindge pin

. But some do not. They tend not to like bi-pods.

the big things that affect accuracy

Barrel fit between the end of the barrel and breachface. you should be able to close on but not pull out a feeler guage that is .0015" or .002" bigger than that and accuracy drops off quickly.

The trigger the ones I have are not gritty but they are heavy, I have not done a trigger job yet, they say it relativily easy probably work up the guts this spring now that I have two actions.

Forearm fit, free float or full bed your guess is as good a mine this is a bit black magic because mucking with it could make things way worst. tough it is pretty common to bed to the mounting lug and free float after.

I would reccomend NOT sighting in +4.5" @ 100, it is ridiculous

it would put your bullet almost 7" above point of aim between 180 & 220 yards. It only stays within 2" of point of aim +/- from 320-360 yards, far past the 'normal' hunting shot

+1.5" high @ 100 would put you dead on at 220 yards and at 300 you're only 5" low (assuming a 90 gr @ 3400 fps) That is a real hunting sight-in

PS if you need some help getting an H&R to shoot, PM Bullcoon, he worked on one and got it to shoot better
 
I have a handi in .204 ruger, a trigger job definately will help out, It made a big difference in mine. It also seemed to take a lot of rounds to really break the barrel in, I was well over 150 rounds before I saw any real improvement with factory ammo. I have since worked up some handloads that easily and consistantly shoot less than an inch at 100 yards.
