I was toying with the idea of accurizing my remy 5r 300 win. My question is it worth it or should I wait till the barrel is shot out and accurize it then. If I decide to preform this myself do I really need a lathe. I know there's a kit out there from Manson Precision that can do this. Your thoughts thanks .

As you probably know you can do a few things to improve accuracy without reworking the action such as bedding the action and having the trigger tuned but having the action and bolt trued seems to help the most in my experience. If you are looking at doing just the one rifle then having someone like Guntech rework the action is the most economical route to go as the Manson or PTG tools are quite pricey. Since the barrel will need to be head spaced and indexed after the action work it makes more sense to me to do this with a new barrel rather than an iffy factory one.

Well at 100 m so far it's not bad . I'm going to the range as soon as the weather is better and test some loads. The true test will be at the PR clinic in April. I figure I would get the most out of the rifle knowing Remys aren't perfect out of the box. The only mods I've done so far is Calvin elite trigger and a muzzle brake . It's sitting in a AICS 1.5 stock

In my opinion accurizing a factory 700 consists of glass bedding the action, free floating the barrel, adjusting the trigger light and crisp, touching up the crown, making sure the scope is mounted correctly and the barrel is clean. That has been a popular procedure since the late 60's.

I believe truing work on the bolt and action is best left until you are going to replace the present factory barrel. Once the truing is complete the lugs will match the action perfectly. I do not 'lap' lugs and do not recommend lapping lugs. If the lug fit is 'off' it is best corrected by machining.

You won't live long enough to shoot out a barrel unless you're shooting hot loads every day, all day.
If you never shoot competition or practice it will last forever. I'm on my 6th barrel for my 280, I go through a barrel every 4 years or so but I like to shoot this rifle a lot.
