Hey guys...I'm interested in buying an ACOG for one of my ARs, but have never used one or handled one, for that matter. All the info I have is based on what I've read and seen over the Internet. Those of you who use or have used these sights, can you please let me know what you like and dislike about them? The model I'm interested in is the RCO model designed for the M4A1 with chevron reticle, but I'm sure that the pros and cons will probably be the same across the board regardless of what ACOG is used.

Thanks...

I know, man...dumbest thing ever.

I've spoken to few stocking dealers, and they tell me that it's becoming more difficult to acquire chevron reticle ACOGs but not the doughnut reticle ones. When I asked why, I was told that the chevron ones are ITAR, while the doughnut ones are not...so rediculous.

I had the chevron on my AR, I liked it. Only CON would be the clear plastic housing for the fibre optic cracking but that it totally normal and seems to affect nothing. I bought it used. No experience with the doughnut.

Another CON, I've heard some dealers will part-out the kit and you will have to buy the mount, cover, cleaning pen and case separately. LAME.

RCO model is cool, but not worth a premium in my opinion. The only difference is horizontal hash marks (apparently useful for leading moving targets) and captured (via wire) adjustment caps. That's it.

Chevron is sweet. Donut isn't my favorite. Best reticle is horseshoe (for me anyway). Not a fan of the NSN01 model with no fiber optics and crosshairs. I've owned every model (almost) of Acog and the only one I keep coming back to is the TA33.

You need to get behind both TA31 and TA11 while doing some drills / running and gunning . As already mentioned the TA31 and TA02 have much shorter eye relief than the TA11

If you only have one rifle / optic combo you can get use to the relatively short 1.5" eye relief ( muscle memory ). I have EOthings , Aimpoints, Tri Power ( with 3X magnifiers ) , various ACOGs and I often find my head position is not 100% perfect the first time I shoulder the rifle with my TA31 and TA02 . The TA-11 is noticeably more forgiving

Only downside is the TA11 is longer . I hardly notice its 3.5X vs 4X

For obvious reasons , the chevron is a more precise aiming point . That's why the Horseshoe is the best of both worlds...you have center dot. Problem is that recticle is not exportable ( end user statement ITAR )

Download this Trijicon brochure . There is a tiny "ITAR" next to some of the models . Those are the ones that civilians in Canada are not suppose to have

There are (or were) a few 4x32 Trijis in Canada with the chevron reticule. I have a TA02 , which has the BD crosshair reticule and i really like the scope. The eye relief is a tad on the close side, however the FOV is huge, and that's what drew me to the scope in the first place. I had a CMR4 from Hilux, and found i was always at 4x, and didn't use the zoom at all. Additionally, the lit green reticule on it washed out on bright days.
I know a lot of folks will push to get away from battery power, but i love the bright red on the trij and i can adjust it with the knob. Mine came complete in the box, and i ordered a scope coat from optics planet to cover it when not in use

The only one I saw 'ITAR' beside was the TA33 w/ 7.62x39 Horseshoe reticle. The .223/.308 horseshoes are fine for some reason.

Look again at the TA11 and TA31's . OP is asking about the 4X32 which with BAC are the TA31s

Most of the desirable ones are ITAR controlled

The TA31F is easily my favourite low power optic. Tried Vortex (PST and Razor), Hi-Lux (CMR), and Elcan (SpecterDR) and the ACOG beat them all out. Glass is crystal clear, large FOV, light weight, no batteries. Eye relief is not a big deal for me, lot of rail space on my Tavor, and there is enough space for both the optic and rear BUIS. Fixed magnification was also no big deal as I found that I would never use 1x.

Tried it on my AR, and the stock needs to be at one of the shorter positions for it to work with a BUIS. If you can find one, the LaRue LT100 is an awesome mount for it as well.

Thx, brother...the Larue stuff is nice, but because it is, we can't have it either! I gotta' stop wanting all of the EVIL STUFF that we're not allowed to have!

I hope that soon enough, one of our better Canadian distributors will manage to import Larue products for civilians, and not just for LE/Military...

All this stuff is out there, I just sold a LT100 recently which I got from another CGNer a while back. While I have no idea how it got across the border, it did somehow. You just have to keep your eyes open for them when they come on the EE (they go fast).

Eye relief on the TA33 is much better than the TA31 series as well. Much smaller FOV though, but much smaller and lighter.

Larue mounts are nice (have one for my TA33), but ADM mounts are as good or better, and easy to find up here, or order right from ADM. Screw Larue! ;)
