I've used Acraglas epoxy for bedding for years. I also use in on knife scales.

Now it does not seem to be available in local stores nor will Brownells ship this out of the US to Canada.

Does anyone know a source in Canada for Acraglas ? If not, what bedding epoxy are people using instead ?

Thanks

Rusty Wood Trading Company has both types of Acraglas. They're a sponsor on this site.

Also, Brownells will ship their non-flamable version of Acraglas gel to Canada. Apparently the release agent is the non-flamable part of the kit. The epoxy components are the same in both kits.

IMO the gold standard would be Devcon steel putty. I have also used JB weld with very good results on my hunting projects. Depends on what your expectations are there but I would say JB could be on par with acraglass. Just let it set up for 15 before applying to the stock. And the best thing is you can get it any time anywhere. My two bits.

"...Acraglas..." It's just two part epoxy with fibreglass filler, release agent and a colouring in the kit. Any epoxy compound will do. Colour with kid's paint powder. Floor wax for the release agent.

"Any epoxy compound will do."

Actually, they are different. A while back, one of my homemade kitchen knives got put in the dishwasher inadvertently by a house sitter. I was using devcon at the time. The scales started separating from the tang and started sliding on the rivets. I did a bit of research and it turns out Acraglas is recommended for higher temperature and humidity.

This doesn't matter much for rifle bedding but for knife scales it is nice to know it will stand up to dishwashers should accidents happen.

I have also bedded rifles with acraglas and have been happy with the results.

Thanks for the tips guys. I'm on the Island so Rusty Wood Trading is not too far from me.

The shrink rate of epoxies varies. I have used devcon F putty for serious bedding jobs. It is easier to work with than Acraglas. I use the Aluminum putty because there is more of it in the 1 pound can.

FOR YEARS NOW i've used Brownell's steel bed and always bought it at Wholesale sports. I can't find it on their website but there are lots of things that they have that are not on the website. It is very similar to deacon but for me it was more convenient. I only used the acraglass for repairs. I hated the acraglass gel.

Different experiences here... I switched to using Acraglass Gel soon after it came out... I love it... steel bedding compounds I hate... :D

Problem with steel filled epoxy is that it weighs like steel and competition guns are always a fight for weight so this bit is usually needed. Any of the "bedding" materials are easily up to the job, look up the specs on them and compare. The word is that acraglass is actually US Composites 635 epoxy 3:1. Cheap compared to Brownells and they will ship, you will need to buy the glass filler as well, called mill fiber in the composites world. They also have mould releases as well, use a wax not the partall which has a measurable thickness.

I order it straight from the source. Just call and tell them your from Canada and they will send the right stuff that can cross the border. Ask them to use US Postal Service Not UPS! I used UPS once crossing the border and the brokerage fee was 40$ on 70$ item.

From my limited research a lot of the 24h epoxy's on store shelves can start to break down after as little as 3 years

Ganderite hit the nail on the head, and shrinkage is one of the most critical considerations in bedding a rifle. Specific rifle bedding compounds are manufactured with this as a major consideration most other epoxies are not. I have heard good things about Devcon but I have only ever used Acraglass Gel since it's introduction for bedding rifles and have been very satisfied with the results. Some of my rifles are more than 25 years old with their original Acraglass Gel bedding jobs.
