What is the differences between Short and Long actions on rifles? I can see the differences but what I want to know is what are the reasons, which one is better, why, etc? Why choose one or the other?

Bolt actions can be made to accommodate different cartridge lengths.

Long actions are for calibres like .30-06, 270, etc.
Short actions are for calibres like .308, .243, etc.
Some makers also make special extra-long "magnum" actions for long cartridges like the .375 H&H.

A short action might save a couple ounces in terms of weight, but that's about it. Generally, cartridge choice drives action length.

Shorter cartridge = shorter action.

Short action is a little lighter, stiffer, faster to operate.

One isn't "better" than the other, just different.

FYI check out the CZ527 in 223 and maybe in a couple of other small cals. This is currently called a Mini Mauser as it is neither a short or long but a scaled down Mauser style action specifically for the cal. Weighs the same as my CZ452 American 22lr. Triuly a sweet rifle and I was able to get one in a left hand action. This is my love gun:)
