Action screw torque

Any body know off hand what the torque should be on rem700 and savage 111 action screws should be?

In wood stocks 32 in/lbs More than this will crush the wood.

In pillar bedded stocks 65 in/lbs

I haven't seen any wood that ever crushed but it will compress...

Even in pillars 45 inch pounds is lots... I am not a believer that more than 45 is of any benefit.

I have seen crush wood under the tang screew (rear action bolt).

Those numbers (32 & 65) come from the Remington custom rifle shop.

What does crushed wood look like? Crushed to me means permanently deformed from it's previous state.

The front screw should be pretty damn tight; the rear screw should be about half that tight. If the bedding is good, this should do it.

I use 45 in my mcmillans but I use 65 in my Hs stocks, all shoot very well
