I finished my rifle build tonight based on a rem 700 in 30-06 tonight. I bedded the rail and installed my rings and scope. Everything fot great and torqued everything to spec. Using Farrell Industries steel rail and low rings. Once I put it all together I tried out a dry fire to see how it feels.

The action is a lot stiffer towards the end of engagement almost as if the torquing down of the rail has warpped the action or chamber. Is this possible? What should I do?

check to make sure the screws on your bases are not to long, could be interfering with the bolt............

could be the front action screw if you played with them as well............but willing to bet its one of the two screws on the front of your base.....

long screw vote here too..

if you managed to warp the action that much using those liitle 6/48 screws... well somthing would be seriously wrong and i wouldnt be fireing that gun haha

That seems unlikely that you'd be able to bend the action without knowing that something is happening.

My first instinct is to remove the bolt and look/feel inside if you can. Quite likely one or more of your screws is too long, or in the wrong hole. Happened to me when I put my scope rings on, I had the screws in the wrong holes and it was causing the bolt to rub. Swapped them around and it runs fine now.

Thanks guys, I got a PM too with the same possible cause. Silly me, in the excitement to finally see this thing done on my bench, I didn't check that with the bolt. I did use my finger to see if they were to far through but I guess that isn't accurate LOL. I will let you guys know tomorrow if that was the cause. Thanks for the speedy replies everyone!

Wow... can't sleep knowing how simple of a problem it COULD be. Low and behold they must have been protruding a couple thou or something cause I took the scope and rings off as an assemble and backed to screws out a bit one by one to see which one it was. The second front screw and the last rear screw. Sanded them down ever so slightly and viola!

Thanks CGN for helping me learn!

I always tighten one screw at a time to see if the screw bottoms out in a hole and leaves the base loose and check bolt operation with each screw tight one at a time. When all four have checked out then I tighten them all...

Screws too long, or even over-tightened? Metal is malleable (it bends, twists, spreads, responds to stress). Try backing off the screws (a bit) to start. Over-tightened screws can warp the walls of a receiver.

And that folks is the right way to do it. Takes an extra minute, but finds the problems before they start.

My best guess too.
Ran into this with a 700 CDL and brand new rings/bases.
Everything went together fine, no apparent binding, but load a shell & pull the trigger ...nothing !
One long screw !

Happened to me installing a receiver sight on my Marlin 336. Can't take the bolt out to clean bore from the breech because one of the screws protrudes just enough to prevent it foom coming out.
