So, silly idea i've been juggling in my head for quite some time.

I'm an iron sights shooter, more comfortable shooting with them than I am with optics, and honestly I just have more fun doing so.

I shoot a lot of 6.5x55 (Swedish mauser) and I was toying with the idea of finding someone to throw on those sights or similar onto a Remington 700 barrel in .223. I've got lots of .223 and it's just a bit easier on the pocket to feed compared to 6.5. I shoot anywhere from 100 to 800 yards and I just enjoy having the range of adjustability depending where I can shoot at the given time.

I'm no gunsmith nor do I have the equipment to do such a thing, just curious if there's any folks out there that might be interested in such a project, or how viable it would be to do so. Costs and etc.

Thanks!

The range markings will have no meaning. The sight was designed for Swedish Service ammunition and the graduations were calculated based on that and the adjustment is quite coarse. Check out the rear sight on an Australian .310 cadet. A sight like that can compensate a bit as it has far more adjustment and a vernier so you can create a dope sheet for yourself.

You can do the math yourself regarding how high a front sight you need. Mounting costs shouldn’t be too much.

As it happens, I have one of the Australian Cadet sights. Better adjustment than most.
A SMLE rear sight with windage adjustment would be better than most. The base would require significant modification to fit another barrel. Maybe cut off the bottom of the ring, then fit and solder the base to the barrel. A Ross or US Krag sight might be worth consideration.
Some Swede sights had the fine elevation attachment, no windage though.
Biggest challenge would be fitting the base of any of these sights to the barrel and then soldering or altering and using screws.
Don't know that I would want to pay someone hourly rate to do the job.

Yeah, I've considered that and that's totally fine by me. I'm mostly just after the sight picture and the elevation adjustability. I can likely just re-mark it as I go. I've also considered the rear sight off of a No.3 enfield too with the windage adjustability. That said, that cadet sight might actually be the ticket i'm after. How much do those go for generally?

I figured this might not be the cheapest of projects and I'm fine with that. With the amount of money I dump into commercial 6.5 and reloads, might as well be able to buy a new gun and more.

I've never seen a Cadet Martini sight for sale. There should be a quantity kicking around though, because so many Cadets got rebarreled to other calibers. A WTB ad might be productive, or try contacting long established gunsmithing shops. Most shops have drawers and bins with loads of miscellaneous odds and ends.
