Not a precision rifle but you guys would probably know best.

Has anybody added weight to a Tikka T3? I've read about adding lead shot, etc. The butstock is hollow and would take a lot of shot, but how do I keep it from becoming a big baby rattle? Anybody have some ideas? Epoxy? Fiberglass?

Fill a ziploc bag and stuff it into the buttstock. No rattle and will not spill out later.

You can also epoxy shot into the foreend. Of course, bolting something to the outside would add alot of weight too.

Plasticine, while not as heavy as lead is a good choice since it not only adds weight but improves the dimensinal stability of the stock

I don't have any experience in the matter, but plasticine isn't permanent so it would be easy to remove or replace with someting heavier in the future. Although it IS flammable.

I know one guy who ballasted his Tikka with epoxy mix. I ballasted one of my target 22 with epoxy and removable steel rods that are threaded at the end. Regarding laminate or wood stock - its not the same thing as synthetic, I can ballast hollow synthetic stock to a lot more weight than biggest wooden stock.

Sure, playschools everywhere give kids flammable substances to play with. It's no more or less permanent than window caulking. It fills the cells within a composite stock nicely and dampends vibration . Don't knock it until you've tried it (or tried to set fire to it)

Used plasticine, works fantastic. The density allowed me to fill the entire hollow of the butt area of the stock and I got the 1-1/4lb I wanted. Rifle balances nicely now. Perc is I can remove the plasticine in about 10 min and be back to stock or add lead shot into the plasticine for more weight and no rattle. Excellent advice Obtunded thanks.

And when you and your friends run out of ammo at the range you can pull the plasticine out and make cool #### with it.

:D :D :D

Plasticine sounds like a good, non-permanent idea, could even mix in some lead shot for more weight. Is there a particular "balance point" that you should "shoot" for or is it all a personal preference thing?

I just went by "feel", moved my balance point back to the center of the mag. The weight was for recoil reduction and give the 6-1/2 pound gun a little more inertia when shooting offhand because I wiggle off the bench.
