Not really a revolver guy, but wanted at least one in the collection. Been looking at this S&W for some time now, and decided I needed an early Christmas gift. Probably not what the revolver "purists" would go for, but it kinda turned my crank, and was .357 mag.

Picked it up yesterday...probably to the range tomorrow!

Awesome! Ya, definitely not for "purists" but to me, only snubnose revolvers and crazy bad-ass revolvers appeal to me (I'm not much of a revolver guy either obviously). That's exactly the revolver I would buy myself if I was rich like you :D

I've been thinking about getting one of those. Did you get it new or used and if so where from. I'm dying to hear how it shoots.

Some guys like the K-frame 19/66. I like the L-frame/GP100 size, but there is nothing with greater appeal than a large frame compensated 8-shot Smith and Wesson, IMO.

Nice gift to yourself.

I have a S&W 27; I love the big N frame with the 357 as it has a lower felt recoil. I have considered one like that in the past; I would much enjoy to hear how it shoots for you.

Bought it new from William's Firearms in Port Perry. They had one in 4 or 5 months ago, but I didn't get up to see it before it sold. When I saw this on their website, I scooted up there the next day. Luckily, they also had an R8, and a TRR8 in the showcase for comparison (I had been considerring one of those also).

R8 and TRR8 weigh in at just over 36 oz. with their alloy frame. This V Comp tips the scales at 46 oz. Thought I'd prefer the heavy frame in a .357.
COREY - A nickel "27" would be my 1st choice in a traditional revolver.

Thanks, Williams Arms is great to deal with and has had some great prices, especially on S&W.

Can't wait to hear how it shoots. Also if you ever get the urge to sell it please let me know.

Had it up to the range on the weekend, with some friends.
First, a couple of comments on fit and finish. Although the gun overall seems to have flaw free finish, the trigger and to a lesser degree, the hammer showed some casting or machine marks. Not significant enough to 'take away' from a gun of this calibre (!), but a little surprising from S&W PC.

I generally prefer front FO sights, however the big orange/red front ramp is plenty clear. The front sight virtually fills the rear notch, unlike my Shadow or particularly my Beretta 92 where there is lots of space either side of the front sight. Maybe this is a 'revolver' thing!

At the range with .38 Spl loaded, my buddy (DSG03)'s wife promply drilled little holes all around the bullseye. Me not so much. Even with this large frame, the grip seemed small to me, and I was having trouble getting any supporting traction with my weak hand, on the lower left of the grip (I have large hands and fingers). DSG03 suggested I take a higher grip, with my thumb web over the top grip, just clearing the cocked hammer. Purchase with my weak hand went up significantly; as did accuracy.
Recoil with factory .38 Spl was very mild, as would be expected with a gun of this weight. 357. Mag recoil was fairly dramatic (a little more than I expected) with the exposed metal frame at the back of the grip, driving straight back into your palm. This is probably the result of the extra weight out on the barrel, and the compensator doing its job. I forgot to check specifically for muzzle flip; maybe because I wasn't getting that much. Next time.
DA trigger pull is quite heavy, but fairly linear, with only a slight change at cylinder lockup. SA, there is no take up, and virtually no movement of the trigger to release the hammer. Its like the trigger only needs pressure, not movement, to fire. Very light...no flinching with this gun.

DSG03 and I are going to do a side by side at the range with his 686 and my V Comp in a week or two. Should be an interesting comparison!

Thast revolver is a beauty! I was torn between buying a 686 and an 1873 SAA Pietta. I went with the Pietta as I hate a DA trigger pull, and would just shoot in SA anyhow. But that is a fine looking weapon!
