What can anyone tell me about a AO scope? Do it constantly need adjusting or is there some kind of default setting? Say for shooting inside 300yrds max. I ask because I have one on the way and never owned one before. It will be mounted on a varmint rifle. The scope in question is a vari-x iii 4.5-14x40.

the AO style of scopes are meant for dialing out parallax error at varying ranges, focus your ocular (cross hairs) then when you shoot at 100, use the AO the bring the image and retical onto the same focal plane, then say your shooting at 300, dial the AO to bring every thing into focus...

paralax will show up as - if the rifle is solid on bags/ rest move your eye /head around slightly, if you have error, the reticle will move on the target, if its adjusted properly, no movement will be seen

the ocular, once set properly, should not need to be adjusted. if you find that the x-hairs are blury when the image is in focus, the ocular is not set properly

You will always have to change your ao with changing range to achieve best precision. However if it's being used for hunting to 300 yards it's not a big deal at all. Scopes without parallax adjustment just have it fixed at 50 or 100 yards and they work just fine.

I find them to be fine for target shooting. took one gopher hunting and I found it more a hassle then anything else

Thanks for the answers so far. I guess I will have to try it for myself when it arrives later in the week. I may end up trading it as i think a non AO might be better suited to my needs.

I like mine. It's especially nice if you want a crisp focus on small targets at closer ranges. Just set it to infinity for hunting if it bothers you. The focus doesn't really change much on far away targets.

I have a vortex crossfire 4-16x30mm with AO, I would prefer it didnt have it for my hunting rifle to be honest. I can get a clear picture for any range, but when it is focused close it is blurry in the distance, and when turned to infinity it is kinda blurry up close. I usually hunt with it turned to around 10 or 20 yards, and if I am waiting for something to come out along tree line I will adjust the focus for that range, but you need to be mindfull of adjusting it back later, kind of like returning your magnification to the lowest setting after having it up high or you cant find game in it at 15 yards when your magnification is cranked to 16 power.

I personally will never buy another scope with an AO. Personal preference, but the side focus changed it for me! Mind you Im always shooting at different distances all the time, and reaching to the end of my scope to "fine-tune" the parallax is annoying beyod belief for me. YMMV
