I'm thinking about investing in some advanced shooting training to improve my performance in IPSC/IDPA. If I were willing to travel anywhere in Canada/US what are some thoughts on great instructors or training opportunities along those lines. I'm thinking personal or small group level training for 2+ days and the cost is not a concern (just give me the ideas and I'll decide if I can afford them - LOL!)

Hello ,

I have an American spouse and have lived quite some time state side and would recommend checking out either of these two options, both are in the Las Vegas area. I will be attending combattacticalacademy next week.

These guys will work with you on setting up a private multiple day training class for either precision rifle, tactical carbines or hand guns. They do a lot of scenarios such as multiple attackers , hostage situations etc and also test you under stress and give you a little certificate for the courses they offer. The private classes are $1000 a day ( all equipment included minus ammo) the non privates are $500 a day.

Another option that is very popular in the states is frontsight.com. They offer all the same stuff as I previously mentioned but have a slightly more fancy compound and will have you on zip lines breeching rooms and the prices are more expensive. They will do privates for you but its more around $2000 a day and they have 2 and 4 day public courses with fairly good discounts if you train with a partner.

Frontsight.com has had a death at their facility on the zip line and some shooting accidents which I would imagine is hard not to with there long history and size of classes. They can have hundreds of people next to you training in the compound. Ultimately I've choose to deal with combattacticalacademy.com based on their communication with me and willingness to tailor programs to my needs.

If you would like more info about combattacticalacademy.com Ill have much more next week after my 2 day private and ill be sure to fill you in on what I thought of it all if you like.

What is your current IPSC Classification? Knowing what level you are currently at will help.

There are some great Cdn shooters who also do courses on occassion. Something to consider since your travel costs will be significantly reduced. Relliot is one who used to advanced skills workshops and did one on one training, he is a great teacher and can pass along some good pointers.

Universal Shooting Academy - Florida.

Manny Bragg is currently here in Halifax for 9 days doing various levels of training for IPSC from master to beginner levels. This is the second time we've had him here and demand keeps growing. He's obviously doing it right. He goes out west regularly to train the Alberta guys. (He just came from Calgary)

You can also obtain training from him, Frank Garcia and Shannon Smith at their home facility in Florida; not far from Orlando - maybe even compete in a big match at the same time or do the theme parks.

Just finished 2 day course with Todd Jarrett who came up to Alberta. Great course and great instructor. Get a few of your local shooters together and see if you can get one of these types of guys to visit you.
Way cheaper for him to come to visit 12-24 of you than for each of you go to States.

Why don't you stay local-ish and see what a couple days of training from people like Steve Russel at EOSC or Rob Elliot or Pat Harrison in Southern Ontario.
For IDPA and/or general shooting improvement in pistol, carbine, shotgun , Phaseline Green has many courses at Grenville when he's not off gallivanting out west!

If you find these courses not good enough for you , then look elsewhere for higher profile courses

if you dont care about travel, pick your favorite pro shooter and contact them. they all do personal or small class training for the right price

I'm only classified as a C shooter right now, but I feel like B is well within my reach I just need to shoot some more classifier stages. I want to shorten my learning curve and am interested in any/all coaching I can get locally. But I was thinking a nice winter vacation would be to travel south and get a day or three of serious coaching/training and maybe put a couple US matches under my belt at the same time.

I'll look into contacting Steve Russell at EOHC. Also, I see contact info for Pat Harrison in his posts so I'll try him as well. Where/how do I get in touch with Rob Elliot?
