Ok, so ive come across the round and did some research. Seems like a awesome caliber! Ballistics of a 7mm, but a .33 bullet, short action and mild recoil. Whats your guys opinion?

Ballistics of which 7mm? Personally I feel that it's at the top end of the ideal caliber range for that particular case. If I was building a light weight rifle for large big game, a bush rifle, or I was in bear country I'd probably be alot more interested in it as a cartridge.

Of the 2 I've shot recoil although not bad was much more then a 308. Good bullet selection in .338. I don't think it does anything a 308 can't do personally. For a handloader a decent mid range thumper for sure. Perfect for black bears and moose in timber.

I have no experience with it, but mild recoil, I don't think so! I shy'd away from it after hearing that the recoil was something other than mild! I could be wrong, though!

I'm sure that the .338 Federal is a dandy hunting cartridge. One of many dandy hunting cartridges.
Are the critters going to notice the difference?

I have one, and its mild recoil compared to a 300wsm - very similar to a 308 - however I have a limbsaver pad on a T3, and I find it a joy to shoot. I load for it, so ammo isnt an issue - brass are no problem. It zips a 185ttsx at 2700fps, and a 200 Hornady FTX at 2600, and is definately bad news for anything in its path.
I practised all summer (200rnds) with it at 200, 300, and 400 yds, no issues hitting 6" gong at 400 with lotsa whap!
I personally think its a pretty cool caliber.

Yeah, paperslayer thats trueee!

Its just a little different..

some say the 308 isnt enough an the 358 is too much..... 33 fits right in there nicely.

If i were huntin critters in close (up to 200) an needed a bitta thump I would of had a Fed, instead i bought a Long Action 35Whelen...

In my opinion its a nice handy light little rifle, short action an mild on the shoulder for the power it gives off..... Id use it for (Sambar)Elk an moose sized game

I suppose it:)has a little less recoil than a 338 06 and you can get it in a short action if i keep hearing that im gonna puke. About the short action i mean. I have a 338 06 it burns enough to get to 2750 with 200 gr. Slightly better sd than 30cal 165 so it puts you back in 308 territoy shooting wise, easy to reload.

I shot a nice Blesbuck at 230 plus M in South Africa this year with a 338-06. It was loaded with a 300 gr partition. It dropped the buck stone dead like a rock. With a good muzzle break, the recoil was like a 308! I am getting a 338 Rem Ultra Mag that has a bit more to give. I will be using a Rem S/S action and barrel on a special sniper rail that allows interchangeability of calibers and actions. This way, I get to use one custom frame/stock for multiple calibers, depending on what I will hunt.
