Advice for new Lever 30-30 owner?

I recently purchased a lever-action Henry in 30-30, with an interest in eventual hunting.
For now I am target shooting and getting familiar with the firearm. Towards that I would appreciate any advice out there for the reliable 30-30 WIN round.
In the short term, what ammo do you recommend for practice?
In the long term, what resources do you recommend for learning about deer hunting in the north-east?

thank you
Federal Blue Box...
Hunting, plinking and general all around E/T defence.
You are good 2 go.

I dont reload, I dont have time (to many hobbies as is) I buy when its cheap and stack it deep.
Federal Hammerdown is my go to, unbelievable how accurate it is out of my Marlin 336

Get a Lee loader and save your brass is the cheapest way to shoot it
This ⬆️
And a decent soft faced hammer.
As also mentioned, Cast Boolits.
The 30-30 Win is an ideal platform cartridge for shoosting Cast Boolits.
You can either purchase (budget shooters supply) casts or make your own on the cheap.
30-30 is a decent deer/ black bear round as long as you know your and the calibers limits.

And you can now join the 30-30 Owners Club sticky in this forum.

All the best.

Some good advice here. Particularly about saving brass and reloading on the cheap with a Lee loader. Also the matching Henry in 22lr or 357/38spcl is a great idea for added practice with identical platforms.

The one I will add is that if you begin hunting with your 30-30, treat it like a bow that makes noise. Get close, stalk and track game. Get into their world and it will serve you well. Try and make it a long ranger and you’ll soon be disappointed

I shot whitetail deer with a Winchester Canadian Centennial carbine and my buddy used my rifle from the set. Never had any worries about which ammo to use back then. I found that what I reloaded with a Lee Loader didn’t always work that good in the carbine. Even a handheld Lee press worked good. Nowadays I hardly ever shoot factory other than milsurp stuff. I cast and powder coat these days.

If you’re using open sights, mount a peep sight before you zero it. If using a scope, mount it first.

Use whatever's cheapest to roughly zero your sights or scope.

You may find the heavier (170gr) bullets more accurate. That’s often the case.

If they’ll shoot accurately enough in your rifle, hunt with 150grain Barnes bullets loaded with leverevolution powder. Better yet, handload your own. It’s not hard to learn if you are the type of person who pays attention to detail. Your request for info tells me you probably are.

This round performs well and will set you up well for black bear and deer if it’s accurate. If not, everyone has a recommendation of their own but mine would be the Sierra ProHunter 170gr as a handloaded second choice, but Remington cor lokt 170gr as a factory round. Or else any of the factory copper rounds if they shoot accurately in your specimen.

Report back later on your experiences, and your first game animal. That’s an excellent rifle. When your collection grows, that one will remain with you.
