I just picked up a Rem 597.
I've shot .22's before, but this is the first one I've ever owned. As such, it's the first one I've bought, the first one I'll have to clean, and the first one I'll have to maintain.
What needs to be done before the gun should be shot?
If I pick up a rifle cleaning kit and give it a good scrubdown, and relube, will I be ready to hit the range?

I'm going to stop by the store on the way home to pick up a cleaning kit, a few boxes of various ammo, and maybe a scope and mount. Anything else that I need to add to my list?

Thanks,

no lube at all and keep those guide rails finger tight, check out rimfirecentral.com there is alot of usefull info

p.s. stay away from remington bulk ammo, unless you want to clean the gun every 10 mins :p

A good cleaning kit (preferably with a one piece cleaning rod), a bore-snake for field use, "eyes and ears" a brick of Dynapoints, a stapler/tape and a handful of targets and you are good to go! You could also add a sling for field use, a trigger lock, and a nice sturdy case.

If you're throwing in munchies, go with the non-caffinated kind.

Once you have all that, you're probably going to need a CZ452 American or two, a Ruger 1022, a Winchester 9422, one or more Marlin 39A, a handful of Savages and the obligatory Lakefield/Cooey.

Welcome to the addiction!:D

Got a nice place to shoot?

Haha, thanks for the advise guys.
I'll stop by the sporting good store on my way home and spend another hundred or so...

Like I said, I just got my PAL yesturday. I've got some guns coming (the old man is giving me his Parker Hale, shotguns, Python, and .22's) but I just had to go buy something to go shoot with while I arrange for those to get shipped up here.

I'm going to go check out Emil's range north of Red Deer. If anyone in the area is interested in showing me the ropes so I don't do anything stupid, it'd be appreciated.

Well, I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything stupid.
Spent about an hour shooting. It was the first time I've shot a rifle in about 10 years.
Went through 40 rounds of American Eagle and 50 rounds of CCI without a hitch. No FTF, no FTE, no odd strays, etc.
I did loosen the guide rod screws a bit before hand though.

Not that I have much to compare it with, but I'm really happy with the 597 thus far. I managed to get a group of 5 into a circle about 1 1/2 across at 100 yards with the American Eagle ammo (the only group I tried at that range with that ammo). The CCI was quite a bit less accurate (surprisingly).
Tomorrow I'm going to go pick up a brick of ammo and a few more magazines if i can find some. Hopefully I'll even be able to find someone to go gopher hunting with sometimes soon.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I found American Eagle to be the most accurate out of Win 490 with CCI a close 2nd and I have tried everything that there is on the shelf aside from the target brands

One mo thing - you may find you need some kind of carry-all box with little trays and shelves. I have one, I bought in fishing department in Wal-Mart I think. Very convenient, I keep there everything from ammo and cleaning kit to steppler, targets, earplugs - you will be surprised how much you might need at the field. Tools too - at least screwdrivers and adjustable. Its 20$ well invested.
