Advice needed 17HMR or 22 Mag.

My 17HMR on small varmints is about as much fun as a guy can have with his pants on, but for coyote/beaver, I would lean toward a heavier bullet.

Maybe we should lobby the ammo manufacturers for a heavier solid for the 17? Best of both worlds.

fill the air with bullets...

I have shot coyotes with a 22 magnum, the hollow point can blow a big hole up to 100yds. I now use a Ruger 10/22 with a 30 shot clip and just fill the air with bullets. Usually have to shoot at least 3 times to finish off though. I would prefer to have a 22 mag semiauto. If you want a very accurate 22 mag, get a Cooper.

why suggest a cooper or anschutz when you just have to "fill the air with bullets"???? Ethics comes into play here.. Clean shots on any game, be it predator, rodent, whatever... scarey!!!!!!!

i just purchased another rimfire, 17hm2 (mach2), now all i need is 22mag and I will have all my bases covered :) with the prices of some handguns, you can either buy 1 hangun, or 4-5 rimfire rifles - love it!

In theory there isn't going to be much difference, that is shooting from a nice rest under ideal conditions and having GOOD bullet placement.

HOWEVER, if you are shooting in the field, especially under less than ideal conditions, and on animals that weight more than about 10 lbs, then I would definitely go with the 22 mag.

mooseman, you killed a deer with a 17hmr? where did you hit the deer and how many shots did you make?

that sounds incredible for such a tiny bullet! there must be more to this ;)

A few days ago while gopher hunting, a coyote stuck his head up from behind a small rise in the field about 120yds away to look at me standing there with my 17HMR.

He's still there.;)
