I have a Remington 700 in .300 WSM and need to replace my scope. While window shopping at a local sporting and outdoors retailer, I was told by one of the firearms sales people that I could easily use a Leupold Golden Ring Ultimate Slam with the sabot ballistics reticle, which could be used for ranging on my rifle or any rifle for that matter as a scope is a scope. Is this true? I have a chance to get this very scope for a song (just by coincidence) from a friend who is getting rid of his hunting gear due to financial issues (he has never used it on any gun - muzzle loader or shotgun or centerfire). Please if anyone can help clear this up for me please pass along your wisdom-my rookie lack of experience has reared it's ugly head once again.

clhdluke, this is your quote. "I have a chance to get this very scope for a song (just by coincidence) from a friend who is getting rid of his hunting gear due to financial issues--"

If your friend is in financial trouble, don't you think you should help him get full value for his equipment, rather than "get it for a song?"

That there is a muzzle loader scope.

There are many more much more suitable scopes for that rifle. Also you may want something of a bit higher quality if you are gonna be doing any longer range shooting. Many of the manufacturers have bullet drop compensator of some type if that is what you are after.

Mainly boils down to what you want to use the rifle on as large game/target etc...............and how much you want to spend. The rule of thumb I have read is a scope of equal or better value of the rifle.

maybe a variable up to 14 or 15 power and at least a 40mm objective. It is a pretty flat shooting 30 cal bullet.

absolutely....he has OFFERED it for a song...a friend is more important than a few bucks...I didn't say that I accepted his offer. But I do need to know what I am getting into before I can do anything. Thank you for putting friendship before money, I wish more people did.
