Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving!

I recently and finally acquired a Mod 70 super grade, 26 bbl, in 300 Win Mag. Never had I seen such a beautiful rifle in my life. It is really a piece of art.

The reason I bought it was a planned moose hunting trip to New Newfoundland next year. I already have a 9.3x62 but I wanted to take two rifles for that once in a life time trip, just in case.
I thought I would load it with Accubond LR 190 or Partition 200, both at around 3000 fps for that trip. Then I started thinking I would also like to hunt deer with it in the woods, using a 165 grains, where max distance would be 200-250 yards. I do not wish to load those 165 grains at 3200 for the woods. Speer offers loads with IMR 4064 at around 2900 and IMR 4831 at around that speed too. The 30-06 can do that as well but I still want to use this 300 win mag in the woods. I hunt from a treestand for the most part.

What do you think?

A Lot of moose on the Island are usually taken under a hundred yrds, so I don’t know if that factors in.

When you do get an opportunity for the3, 4,5 hundred yard shots, they’re going to be ##### to get out.. lol

At least on the West Coast, in the Zones I hunt.

Been there, done that as far loading the Win Mag down - 165's at 2850-2900 is starting loads and performs great on game. Impact velocities will be sensible. My "hot" .30-06 handload pushes 165 SSTs to about 2930 which is a solid medium game loading, so look at the starting charges in the Win Mag case.

As far as the heavy bullets, the 200gr partition I've used on a moose but it was a full power IMR 4831 load and the result at about 150 yards was extremely effective, pulverized shoulder, through the lungs with full expansion, nice big hole out the other side. Bullwinkle hit the dirt DRT.

Thanks to all of you. So there seems to be two options 1) 165/200 and 2) 180 NP or Accubond for everything. As I have 165 bullet and 200 NP and no 180, I will go for this option now.
