Well this year, for the first time in 4 years, I have decided to pick up my compound bow for deer season at least. Presently, I am practicing of course.
The thing is, I know I yearn for a more primitive tool.
And I cannot decide between a recurve or a longbow for next year.

If I do go with a longbow, or something close to it, what is a reasonable, maximum, ethical and effective range can I expect (with pre-season all summer practice at least) on bambis?

Thoughts please, from those who know firsthand.....;)

Only you can be the judge of that. Your practice will define what distance you will be confident of hitting game properly. As with rifles, compound bows or traditional archery shoot no farther than you can reliably hit when practicing. If you can only hit well at 25 yds while practicing then you shouldn't shoot at game beyond that distance. I suggest going to a 3-d archery range and shooting a few rounds to get to learn what your capable and confident of and stay within those parameters.

Most if not all people who go from a compound will find it alot easier to start off with a recurve. I have all three and I must admit the longbow was frustrating. With my longbow I am confident out to 20yds (55#@28"), Recurve almost double at 35yds (63#@28") and compound 50yds but I would definately hold this shot or any shot if I can get closer. My farthest shot to date has been 17yds from a treestand and 22yds from a ground blind both pass thru shots. The only thing you yourself can do is practice practice practice.
