I just purchased my first handgun; a CZ 75BD. I fired one at a range b/f so I think I made a decent purchase and should really enjoy it.

Anyway, my plan is to buy 2 handguns to start off a little "collection" so now I'm wondering if I should go with the CZ 9mm and a .45 or the 9mm and a revolver? Any suggestions? I'm (tentatively) looking at CZ 97B pistol or a Ruger GP100 but suggestions are very welcome!

You already have a CZ, so get something different. 9mm semi-auto is a good choixe for a first gun. Your second, IMO, should be a .357 magnum revolver.

The GP100 is my favorite handgun. Amazingly accurate. Replace springs with a set of Wilson Combat and it is buttery smooth. It has been termed as "a poor man's Python" :D

A S&W K or L frame revolver. Model 19, 66, 586, 686, 14, etc. No need to change parts as the triggers are great as built.

My first handgun was also a CZ 75B. I wanted either a 22 semi or revolver for my second handgun and also looked at the Ruger GP100 357. I ended up going with a Ruger Redhawk 44 Magnum simply because I load my own ammo and came to realize how flexible the power level of the 44 mag is. I can shoot powder puff 44 Special loads, or full power loads for ####s and giggles. If you reload, consider a 44. Eventually I will get a 22 though.

I'm no big fan of wheel gun... so I'll skip this option.

There are quite a few way to build a collection. you can go by
- Major design for a given caliber... next purchase could be a Glock, Browning HP, Walther P38, SIG210...
- Major design, military police use... 1911 in 45, Browning HP
- By brand of choice... CZ97

Or do like so many of us do... by opportunity, wait for a great deal to come along and jump on it!

Lots of interesting suggestions; thanks! I'll have to give it some more thought. I know that I enjoy shooting pistols but I'm not so sure about revolvers but I've only shot a .22 and a .44mag. Something in the middle might be fun.

sillymike, here's another way to build a collection: I was born in '75 so I got a Sako 75 in '97 then a CZ 75 and figured a CZ 97 would complete the circle nicely. ;) Seriously though, in terms of being a "major design" where does the CZ 75 fit? Or is it just an amalgamation of features...like a Heinz 57?

The CZ 75 is on of the first "wonder 9mm"... many consider it to be one of the best platform for the 9mm, even Col. Cooper gave it a thumbs up!

75 is the year it was introduced...

As your "collection" grow, you'll also probably end up getting various variation of certain model... Like the CZ85 and CZ75-SP01... (Don't ask me why, seems like we all do it sooner or later)

Ruger Mark III .22/45... cheap to shoot, fun as hell, accurate to boot.

If you want a show piece that you won't shoot too much, Taurus .454 Raging Bull. Well built, great looks, always draws a crowd at the range, and even skeptics say how impressed they are by it after shooting it. By far the most complimented gun in my collection.

My first handgun was a 9mm also, second was a .44mag revolver

If you're getting a revolver get a .44; 'cause .357 is for girls and anything larger (.44+) isn't very practical.

I would say "get a wheelgun", and you probably can't go wrong with the S&W K/L frames or the Ruger GP100 suggested, however before that I would suggest a .22, either pistol or revolver, or a Kadet conversion unit for your CZ.

blake

+1

I'd get the .22 conversion unit for the CZ. Then a 1911 in .45ACP. Then a S&W wheelgun with 6" barrel in .357 Magnum.

yeah, funny how the "one brand thing" happens. i have a CZ75B in satin nickel finish. i adore it. it just fits. then i got to shoot a CZ SP-01 shadow. Amazing gun, i want it. then i got to try a CZ75SA (single action); never felt a factory trigger like it.
so next for me is the shadow
then i want a CZ 97B.........

I gotta give this a bump. Can I get some opinions on getting a .22 Kadet conversion kit, as opposed to, just buying a .22 pistol? The conversions are about $400 new so I could probably get a .22 pistol for that much. Any advantages/disadvantages either way (other than familiarity)? Thanks again!

I went through the dilemma of making those choices not long ago. I went Kimber .45, S&W 686, Sig P226 9mm. Somehow that all happened in 2 months and I'm still not sure how that happened. My hand kept picking up the phone by itself and calling a certain store in Alberta. I think they put something on the first one and got me hooked. Then I decided to trust CGN EE and now I have quite a few more. G*d help me I'm getting ready to call Questar about a Colt SCG from the States...help!
