I purchased this rifle a while back and before firing, disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. Thought I would try it without any lube in the action first to see how it cycled.Went to the range with the Sears 6C last week and a box of Winchester HP ammo. Noticed that the first shot would go, then the second round wouldn't chamber more often than not. Also that the occasional shell wouldn't eject properly and action would jam. So, thinking that I should start with the ammo selection first... Advice?

iy is nothing to do with the ammo. it has to do with the extractor and ejector. both could be worn badly. When the action is run dry, it functions 100% in my 64s. and loading may be signs of worn mag lips. any ammo i have fed my 64s seems to go thru without hesitation. Some manufacturers ammo is dirty and does require cleaning more often.

I wondered about the mag. Maybe I'll source out a spare and give it a go. What got me thinking about the ammo was a couple of things: My old nylon 66 cycled better on some ammo over others and also because there were a few hp strays in the box of ammo
I was shooting from that were lead, and had more of a crack to them...

Often there are odd balls in any bulk ammo but if it happens quite often then it should be mechanical. My first issue '64' cycles great on all ammo. i tried many different manufacturers and settled on the one that gave the best results for the cost. Many older guns have trouble with the rough hollow point ammos that are available but cycle great on the round solids of any type.
new mags are available cheap from Savage Arms directly and used mags can just be another headache as they are already worn into another gun action. the extraction situation can be the spot where the extractor fits into the rear of the barrel. dirt buildup is a problem area there.

I adore my 64's!

Clean, and dry? ESP under extractor?
Chambers the first manually, but doesn't really pick up #2?

I've not had any real success with Winchester Ammo...to many FTFeed trouble in my 64's....Mine do enjoy Fedral Champions (525 bulk) AE's, anything CCI. Seem to prefer solid, round nosed stuff in general and, most round HPs.

Mags are available new.

I remember the AE's working well in my old nylon 66, which made me think about the ammo. Unfortunately I was at the gun shop on the weekend and forgot to buy different 22 ammo - i guess I'll have to make another trip! Any links on where to pick up clips? Seems like a fun little shooter, I just need to iron out the wrinkles with it...
