Good day - MCR uppers are available from Wolverine and I'd be interested in trying to build one. Notionally, a person could build a short barreled upper to serve as a restricted range toy. Kodiak seems to have the gas block, but is a person confined to a carbine gas length? Any tips on parts sourcing or design?

third echelon do a mid-length piston, but if you are going sbr then you are thinking pistol length? don't think there is anything out there for a wk/ws so you would have to custom make one (ie, cut one down with a hacksaw).

otherwise, if you price it out it's cheaper to buy a complete gun used and modify it than it is to assemble all the parts. sell the take-off barrel and buy the barrel you want.

Yes, I think you're right. You'd just need a barrel with carbine gas port.

it's not the hardest. with a 223 bolt you can build a 300 aac with just a barrel change. with a 7.62x39 bolt you can also do 6.5 grendel with just a barrel change. also 450 bushmaster, etc. tna sells 7.62x39 conversions for a 223 gun so that you can build multiple uppers for one lower and not have to sweat registration of the short barrel upper. short barrels are hard to find as getting anything AR into canada is now difficult. also with the wk/ws gas block is proprietary so you are stuck with barrels that are 0.75" OD.

i bought a 7.62x39 complete upper, sold the barrel, and ordered a custom grendel barrel from ibi. made for a very nice rifle.

also, note that say 7.62.39 can have much crankier primers than 223 so sometimes not just a matter of swapping uppers; trigger springs have to change as well.

The only place that has the necessary gas block is Kodiak directly. Funny that no retailer has all the necessary parts to build an upper. Thanks for reference to Third Echelon mid length gas piston. Had never heard of them before.
