hello, I need some advice on bullets for my 300 win mag (remington 700). I will be hunting whitetails and shots are anywhere from 50 - 250 yards.... 250 will be my max...

By the way I dont reload so it will have to be store bought....

any suggestions? What has worked for you guys... I hear the new xp3 are supposed to be good but I cant find them in stores.. went to walmart and canadian tire and didnt find either.... I am in edmonton by the way.

thanks for the adivce, tried using the search function but came up with nothing,

I am willing to buy reloaded ammo if anyone is willing to spare some :)

Hi,

I use wal-mart cheapies in my .300 (browning BBR) and they are great, (for accuracy) for keeping the deer in one piece not so much ;).

Anyhow the cheapies i am talking about are federal blue box (power-shok) 180 grain speer hot-cor. I took my deer with one on my last trip (2 weeks ago) and it dropped on the spot, about 200yd shot.

One of my hunting buddies was using the new federal loaded barnes-x 180 grain, and those bullets are great, just not for deer. (in the 300 WM caliber), on a clean shot at about 100yds entry was at base of neck (can you tell we like the deer meat) and the bullet went inside destroyed one shoulder and some spine and made a #### load of damage.

Maybe on a 300yd shot the barnes-x would not be as destructive but close range it terminal performance is crazy (i.e. kills deer dead, but the vacuum it creates inside the cavity just messes up a bunch of things).

Another bullet you might want to try is the federal 'fusion', basically a bonded copper and lead bullet in a fancy looking box.

My choice for you (and myself next season) will be nosler partition 180gr, loaded by whoever, as long as they make the ammo, and it shoots up to 1.5" 3 shot groups at 100yds, i will be happy.

I used Nosler partitions before and they did not ruin the deer in any of the instances.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Cheers,

Alex

It really depends on what shoots well out of your rifle. For out to 250yds I'd use Winchester 180gr Power Points ($25/box). For a more premium bullet with a flatter trajectory I'd use Hornady 165gr Interbonds ($33/box). Those two offerings are accurate and consistent in my 300WM so YMMV.

Instead of spending $50+ for one box of XP3's or other premium bullet, pick up 2 or 3 boxes of cheaper cartridges (ie, , 150-180gr Power Points/CoreLokts/Interlocks, etc...). Use the most accurate load for hunting and the others for practicing.

I don't reload either so I've had a few guys work up loads for me and that has always turned out well.

Anyway, hope that helps a bit.

Umm... no actually it sucked part of the lungs out through the ribs and the inside had a lot of burned blood, etc. This deer was shot broadside by my other friend (we took 3 deer in total) and it just F@@@ed it up royally inside. (180gr barnes-x)

Walmart and Canadian tire are not the best stores to visit if you want to find a good selection of loads especially the premium loads.

Could it be that the hydrostatic pressure created by the bullet forced some material out of the exit would rather than the bullet "sucked" out the material?Could that so called "burned" blood actually be clotted blood?

Thanks, needed that word in bold :) (damn ESL) anyhow, the bullet went right trough, in one piece, no disenegration of the actual barnes-x at all. I mean parts of lungs were in the exit hole between the ribs, so I said vacuum, best way i thought to describe it. The bullet is solid, just I think it has a little too much oomph for mule deer. (in .300WM and 180 grain). Any no, the blood was not clotted, that happens later (like you can tell when you're draining the deer, cleaning it, etc.) this was burned/bruised/nasty s**t. I should've taken pics :( oh well.

For deer only any bullet is OK, even from the 300 WIn, at close range just about any bullet including the TSX makes a mess, it's just a function of bullet velocity. When it moves up to anything more than deer it matters more, I shoot the 168 gr TSX in mine and it's awesome, however you need to handload it.

Where?????????

I have been looking for those for a long long time. I think federal discontinued making this round in 2000 or so. could you let me know the stock number?

It would be something like P300###x That is a sweet round and really quite powerful.

Thanks,

Alex

p.s.

If anyone knows where to get some of the 200 grain nosler partition high energy from federal, please let me know, I will buy 5 boxes at least. Thanks

As good as any. A choice probably better than most. One of my favorites for the 300 WM and what I have now, .308 Norma Mag is the 200gr Sierra BT.:) Accuracy wise and the performance on Moose, it has been all I could ask for.;)

You'd be a real sucker if you bought any of the high priced ammo. People who think that a "premium" (the blanket term for specalized bullets) is needed for a deer out of a 300 Win Mag realy need to shoot more deer and read less hype.

Before I reloaded, I shot Winchester Supreme Ammo- Failsafes then the Partition Golds starting in 1997 and in 2004 I switched to the Accubonds - all 180grains. I got tired of the nose rounding off on the PG's and when the Accubonds came out, I tried them. I now reload Accubonds and TSX for both my 300WM and my 270WSM. You could also try the Federal TSX ammo.

Incredible performance woth the Accubonds. Federal also has 180gr ammo in the Accubonds.
