Trying out some 80 ttsx in my mark5. 257 weatherby
Thinkin of leavin the 280 at home on the next sheep hunt.
Wont be shooting past 500 , but lookin to fight the wind with a faster bullet.
Powders at hand R22 , R23, H1000 , H 4831SC , H1000, are the first that come to mind.
Any other suitable candidates?
Pet loads? Or recipes

Thx for your time.

I did a bit of a live animal test on bullets in the .257 Weatherby a few years ago. A few more than 250 animals in 7 days, mostly fallows and red hinds but a bit of chital and rusa as well. My hunting partner took a similar amount.

I used 80 grain TTSXs, 100 grain Scirocco 11s, 110 Accubonds, and 115 grain Ballistic Tips. On game performance between the Accubonds and NBTs was about the same, very fast killing. For some reason the Accubond load started pressuring up and backing off the load didn't help. Had to discontinue that one.

The Scirocco was a stand out in penetration and killing.

The 80 grain TTSX load (IMR 7828) came in at 3950 fps. It was very accurate. On game performance was pathetic compared to the others. Pathetic to the point that I had to quit using them. My favorite comment was, "They shouldn't be fookin' allowed to sell those". Auzzies have a way with words. :)

Great , thc guys.
have a couple lbs of 7828ssc sitting around.
I agree dogleg . The energy transferred is very different with monolithic bullets,
As to cup and bore bullets, sure dump that energy qiuck!! Wow
.
Did you by chance recover any of the barnes or acccubonds??

I never recovered any 80 gr TTSXs.I dont even know anyone that has. :) I did get a couple Accubonds back. Those were about whT you would expect, somewhere around 60% weight retention and 100% expansion.
