sorry to start up another general thread, but i know so little about optics, i don't really even know where to start...

I want to get a cheap starter scope for my 10/22, and maybe use for my sks as well

so obviously it doesn't have to be the most accurate thing ever.

I have read up a bit on the importance of Adjustable Objective in removing parallex. And I see marstar has one on sale right now

Marstar 3-12x50mm w. Illuminated Duplex Reticle (silver)
Precision ground multi-layer coated optics with adjustable 50mm objective, solid one piece machined alloy main tube, and illuminated duplex reticle with 11 brightness settings powered by a standard CR-2032 cell. Matching high profile 'see-thru' scope rings are included.

what do you guys think of this as a start? i don't have the money to spend hundreds and hundreds on quality high-featured optics; i'm just looking for the best bang for the buck (under 150).

thanks!

Scopes

Bing for your 10/22 there a number of acceptable products well under a $100.00 that are designed to be used with .22 ammo on rimfire rifles, and do not require a parallax adjustment. Bushnell and Simmons make OK 3-9 scopes for rimfire rifles that come with rings for less than $60.00.
Your SKS will likely be shot a greater distances than your 22 and you would look at a scope that is more suitable to a center fire cartridge, a Bushnell trophy might be a good choice. FS

ah so it'd be better to go with a scope made for .22s and a seperate scope for center fire rifles.

what other ones would be a good starter one for center fire rifle? I don't care too much about "features", just want one that's reliable.

The scope was a Burris Fullfield II 3-9x 40mm. That being said I'd go with AO. I'll be putting a Falcon Menace 4-14x 44mm with MP-20 reticle on my 10/22. The Burris will go on my Winchester Coyote M70 243WSSM.

Another option are the Leupold EFR scopes. But they are pricey. I wouldn't buy a cheap scope. The Burris was the cheapest I've bought but I did the research first and wasn't disapointed.

On my 10/22 I currently have a Tasco Varmint 2.5-10x42. I also have one on my CZ Varmint. I know some people have really bad mouthed Tasco scopes but these scopes have served me well and have a lot of service left in them after 4 years and thousands of rounds. They are inexpensive: 80.00@SIR/Cabelas, maybe cheaper at Wholesale Sports. FWIW, I've recently modded my 10/22 and am looking to put a better scope on it. The Falcon Menace looks very good for the money and this is what I intend on putting on my 10/22. I'd like to put one on my CZ as well but one step (er, scope) at a time.

I have a Bushnell .22 Rimfire scope, 4x fixed. It is really clean and doesn't get washed out in the sun. Probably can pick up one for less than 50 if you look hard enough. It is decent up to 50 yards, hard to see smaller things at a distance though which is a downfall of a fixed but no adjusting just point and shoot. I am using it on an old Cooey .22 and will be using it on my 10/22T when it comes in this week.

If you plan on doing any kind of precision shooting at a distance get something a wee bit powerful. Also if you can, look through the scope before buying it, not the sun though :D

As for your sks, mounts are something you will need to look in to. Eye relief if you mount it where the rear sight is and clearance for ejecting cartridges. lots of info on this. Not sure if you new this. AGE

Bushnell Banner 4-12x40AO on my 10/22T and Savage Mk II. Around $105 from wholesale. They have worked well for the last year.

If you don't have a lot of money to spend, buy the most expensive one you can afford that will do the job. The story rings true that you get what you pay for when it comes to optics. Buy cheap=buy twice.
Only a rich man can afford to buy a cheap scope.

I have never seen 'see-thru' mounts that will allow you to get a good cheek weld on the stock.
