Hi all
My daughter wants to try out for the u25 Dcra team for 2023 .so it looks like dad has to supply a rifle and ammo for her ,so she promptly selected the one target rifle I have that is fully set up with ammo that is super consistent and is a tack driver. Now my problem is that I need to get a diopter sight setup on it the rifles previous owner had it set up for this as it has a dovetail on the front of the barrel for a front sight . I have no experience on this style of sight and need a little advice on what sights to get where to get them and how they mount .most of the ones I see on the net appear to clamp to a 22 style dovetail rail not a big deal as I do have the skills and ability to make a adapter that can bolt into the rifles scope mount screw holes.any input on what sight to get would be appreciated she will be shooting up to 1000yards and the rifle is a 308

RPA, Centra, Gehmann, Warner come to mind, although I see that Al Warner is not currently producing sights.
There are also the older classics like Central.
Lots and lots of options and variations. Variable irises, front and rear, variable diopters, various front sight diameters.
Front sight units may be mounted on a dovetail. Or bases clamp on. Some prefer ladder front sight units that incorporate gross elevation adjustment options, so that rear sight elevations are modest.
Does your daughter have any established preferences? Other gear? Mitt/glove, sling, shooting coat, shooting matt, spotting scope? Plotting system?
What rifle is she using?
Range access?

The rifle she will be using is a cil950t we shoot at borden and have a range in the back yard she doesn’t have a jacket glove and a lot of the other parifnalia yet . Probably will be spending the winter putting it all together I also have to do a stock swap from her 243 to the 308 (identical gun ) and the rifle has been shot on electronic targets at 1 k so it should work very well

Go with an RPA or a Centra, both sights can be ordered to fit either an 11mm dovetail or a Picatiny/weaver base. For the Palma team to SA she will need 1/4 click sights that move clockwise up/right. Not what the American's call match direction. For front sights a ladder sight is preferred in either a 22mm or 30mm with adjustable iris. The ladder sight allows you to change elevation from 300-1000 without changing your head/cheek position on the stock.

Glad I asked ,so you can order the rear sight to just clamp onto a weaver style rear base that’s one job that doesn’t have to be done.

For front sights, I would use Riles or Cooper. For the rear, Centra, RPA, Lear, Higginbottom depending on budget. Lear is only available for top mount dovetail at this time. Higginbotttom is Central side-mount and availablity is unknown.

This if you are shooting distance. Avoids any issue of running out of adjustment to zero the rear sight too. Have had that happen.

Doesn’t the 950T have sight mounting holes drilled and tapped on the left rear side of the receiver? If so you can procure an appropriate rear sight mounting base for your chosen sight.

RPA makes a rear sight that mounts on a Picatinny style top rail, but I believe they are made with AR style rifles in mind, which might put it too high for a bolt gun, spoiling her cheek weld and head position.

OK Weber has them on their website if you want to have a look, Centra might make one as well but confirm what sort of mounting height it produces on a bolt gun with a conventional stock.

My rear sights on RPA target rifles are so low they almost touch the action, which keeps my head nice and low.

First - thanks for being a supportive dad! The quest for winning equipment is never ending. The brand names change, but the principles are the same. You're trying to align back sight with front sight with target. Do it right the first time and keep doing it.

Rifle, scope, scorebook, ammunition, jacket, mitt, sling, hat, and cleaning supplies. Not much more required than that to fire a match.

The CIL is an old design Savage solid bottom action. It is equivalent to a Sportco. As long as the barrel has bullseyes left in it and the trigger is sharp, as a starter rifle it is not wrong. However, my lessons were learned with lots of free ammo and a lots of range access. If you're reloading each round and building skills with a coached training regime, it might be worthwhile starting off a little higher with a middle "class" rifle so the new shooter can approach the performance abilities of the rifle over time without plateauing.
