Advice on the Remington 700 SPS

I’m looking at getting a new, to me, rifle. I’m in conversation with a fellow CGN’er for a trade; ultimately I would be getting a Remington 700SPS with a magpul Hunter stock. Any thoughts on this set up? It’s significantly heavier that my Ruger American. Most of my hunts are from a blind or stand, but not entirely. If it matters, it’s chambered to .243.

Thanks in advance, and please no Remington haters. I’m aware of the issues Remington occasionally has.

I don't know why you need to replace the stock with that somewhat ugly pig to hunt from a blind or stand... I would prefer to put a piece of wood on it, bed it, and rework the trigger...

I've shot lots of different rifles.. TBH, I wouldnt trade my main 700 for any of em. I have heard that contemporary 700s can be hit and miss though, luckily I've got a keeper.

I don’t have a choice with the stock, it’s what’s on there right now. Personally I prefer the standard synthetic or wood.

Per Remington this thing weighs 8.5lbs bare, which is my worry for packing in and out of the bush.

I’ve never had any issues with my 700’s, they’ve all been shooters. The magpul Hunter is a nice stock, comfortable but heavier. As long as it’s not the sps varmint weight shouldn’t be too big of a problem if you’re mostly out of a blind or stand.

my backup 700 has an standard hogue stock, not overly cumbersome.. It would be my choice for hunting.

My 700 has a Bell and Carlson sporter stock and I can shoot sub MOA groups with my hand loads all day long. Definitely a keeper!

I used to use the same set up for hunting. Ended up trading it off. I went with a lighter setup. I would look at something more conventional in the 700 set up. Those magpul stocks are good but heavy.

The 700 is a significantly better action then the Ruger American, and im a Ruger fanboy.

700 stocks are a dime a dozen, so just find one you like. I'd do the trade. Sell the magpul
