Advice on what it's worth please

My son is headed to university this fall and wants to sell his rifle (I want to cry) for the extra coin he will need. It's a T/C venture action with a 26" med heavy barrel, heavy recoil lug installed, action is blueprinted and trigger was worked on as much as the smith (Sam Adams) could. It's a .308 and I don't think the barrel has much more than 100 rounds through it, if that. He lost interest (again, I want to cry). Sam Adams is a reputable gunsmith and did all the work. My son paid $1000 for the barrel and recoil lug plus the labour, not including what he paid for the rifle when he bought it new. What should he expect to get, I have a number in my head but I don't want to tell him....

"...paid $1000..." What make? It a match grade barrel? He's never going to see a grand for the rifle though. TC's just aren't worth that much. I'd guess half that, maybe. Custom work doesn't add to the value of hunting rifles.

He said Icon not Venture. And your last statement is totally clueless, or I and many many more people have duped a pile of folks (or better yet they duped themselves). Custom work does create value its just not a good way of making money on a project

Your looking in the $1100-1300 range, and expect a longer sales cycle. People jump on brands with more traction like the Remington because everyone has seen them, and its a near 70 year old design. The Icon is a great action, and BTW my previous estimate is based on it being a stainless version. You would likely see $100-150 less for a blued model.

Um... OP states Venture not Icon. It would have to be as the Icon has an integral lug as part of the reciever, Venture uses sandwiched lug ala Rem 700.

As a re-barreled Venture I would say with all due respect, It's not going to be worth much. Certainly not $1000+ as is being suggested.

It sounds like dad is going to offer a $1000 loan and will eventually own the rifle.
Custom rifles are not an investment but then neither are most rifles.
You buy what you want and perhaps break even if someone wants it more than you!!!

Sorry OP, you're boy shouldn't have built on a TC. He won't see a grand for that thing on the EE. Tell him to get a student loan like the rest of us mere mortals. Selling that rifle is locking in a serious loss.

My bad, I was reading with the wrong eye. In that case, I am far off and apologize for the ignorant interjection on that part.
The part about custom work not adding value is still bunk. You won't make your money back for sure, but a standard Remmy BDL from the 80's in good shape is worth 500-750 depending on the chamber. If it has a custom Shilen tube installed after a good blue print its worth 150-250 more. Having that work done will ring a fella $700 though.

$750 and I bet it takes a while to sell. Sadly he won't get anywhere near what he paid. If the barrel has a real good name associated with it like Shilen or Gallaird, he might do a little better, but I doubt it.
