So I have this 8x57 Mauser that I bought ~ 25 years ago from a friend in the army. Shoots pretty good with the right ammo (I've gotten ~ 1.5 MOA). However, I'm getting old (well my eyes are) and I'm thinking of putting a scope on it. I've been reluctant to do modification to it in the past as it just didn't feel "right". Currently the rifle has a peep sight that some previous owner put on it.

Anyway, thought I would ask around some opinions/options/advice for putting a scope on it. The range I usually go to is only 300m, so I don't think it has to be anything to fancy.

Here are some pics:

Some markings on the receiver - anybody know anything about them?

To my mind the collectibilty has been significantly reduced already by the peepsight being mounted on it - so I say go the whole hog, and put a scope on it.

You could try one of the mounts that replace the rear sight, and use a Long Eye Relief scope if you didn't want to make any further modifications - otherwise get it drilled and tapped for a scope mount on the receiver.

The rifle is a post-WW2 Romanian rework (we tell this from the blued buttplate, and the vz.24 front sight protector) of what seems to be either a 'K' (1934) dated 98k, or the receiver used to be on a Gew 98, and reworked in 1934... Shame, both types in original condition are pretty hard to come by....

Since its already drilled, turret mounts and a 26.5mm euro tube for a scope would look nice. Check out accumounts.

Thanks for the opinion all (and for the info about the stamps on the rifle as well). What everyone is saying kind of confirms what I was thinking. I wasn't thrilled about the peepsight when I bought it, but the price was just to good to pass up.

Time to do a bit of research on the Accumounts. I notice that Marstar has some 98K mounts as well that seem interesting - has anybody tried those out?
