Im looking for a good bird dog and Ive come down to either a German Shorthaired Pointer or a German Spaniel. The German Spaniels are super rare breed it seems, finding a breeder in the area (Alberta) seems impossible, but I have leads a new litter of GSP pups. Is anyone able to give me any advice, performance reviews, or info on either breed?

I have put a deposit on an upcoming litter of GSP so it's possible I am a little biased towards them. Although I have never hunted over one, my uncle has had on for quite a few years and she is a great all around dog. She points with zero training. I'm not saying you could hunt over her without any training, but the fact is their instincts are there. She's a fantastic family dog as well.

My experience with GSPs is that they can be somewhat aloof. So if that bothers you, I wouldnt go down that path. Ive never even heard of a German Spaniel, so I cant comment.

We have Vizslas. Fantastic bird dogs, and the exact opposite of aloof.

Get a Shorthair, they are excellent hunters and friendly dogs. Just don't restrict yourself to looking only in your area, find the right breeder and ship the dog if you have too. PM me if you would like a list of breeders.

I don't own a GSP, no breed bias, but I speak from being around many from different lines.

Find the closest NAVHDA chapter and attend their spring test and you can observe different dogs.
