I'm more of a bolt action shooter but I am looking to get a AR style rifle for a change of pace. Now I don't want to go all crazy with the budget nor do I want to go with the "Y upper mated to the X lower" with the "ABC dohickey this and the @#$ must have mil spec that" so I am considering the Bushmaster A3 carbine and the Smith and Wesson M+P 15. Of these two which do you guys consider the better way to go and why ?

I won't be putting thousands of rounds through the AR nor will I be competing or anything. This will be a rifle I will shoot for fun now and again.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

I have a Colt and an Armalite. As new Colts are out of the question (although are available used with low round count) I can certainly recommend Armalite for a quality product. Mine is an 11.5'' M15A4. The only upgrade I would perform would be a quality trigger with a 5# crisp break. I don't like any take up in my triggers, except for the two stage variety.

Thats what they are good for. Shooting service rifle with an AR is great fun, and challenging. Also since all the matches are different in some way you will always have room to improve. As for putting thousands of rounds through it, it is very easy to do.

Buy a 20" rifle you can always get a shorter upper later if you want to pretend to be a door kicker.

tough call between bushy and smitty. firing both to help decide would be perfect but may be unlikely. jmo i'd go for the m&p. either way you will have a fine ar, good luck.
