Advice Sought From You Knowledgeable Folks

Our club EESA hosts a military shoot every year. I want to take part but I don't own any milsurp stuff. I am thinking of starting out with surplus bolt action to shoot this match. I like the idea of peep sights, which limits me to SMLE and Enfield P14/P17 as far as I know. I really like the swedish mausers and the 6.5X55, but I don't know how I will do with the open rear sights. I also have a soft spot (one of many, ask my phrenologist) for the 7X57. I know this is a lot disjointed, but I want your input on what you would buy, where to look and what I should expect to spend. BTW I am a reloader and would not mind assembling my own ammo.

What are the rules for sights?
Will they allow shooting glasses with an iris?

I haven't shot the match yet, perhaps someone who has will reply. I just assumed you used an "as issued" firearm and the sights that came with it. I can't imagine anyone would have a problem with glasses with shooting aids.
Okay, now you guys have me all interested in thes K11 and K31 swiss rifles. They seem reasonably priced but where do you find 7.5X55 ammo? Is it really 7.5 or just 7.62/.308 diameter bullets by another name? Please elucidate.
Another rifle I was always interested in is the Krag with that funky magazine. The Norwegian Krag, in 6.5X55, is supposed to be a better arm than the US Krag in.30/40. Anybody have experience with and/or a source for these

The as issued classes of the spring BLAST OFF shoot require as issued sights. And yes your glasses with the iris stuck on would be good to go. You can check out the Blast OFF spring shot at EESA under events for more detailed info. We do have several competitors from the MONTREAL area that come to the shoot each year.

7.5 is for the bore. min spec for k31 is 7.51mm, .2956".
GP11 bullet is .3075" at it's widest part inside the case neck, it tapers from tip to boat tail.
It's a VLD bullet.
7.62(Nato)is for bore of .30, bullet diameter of .308" is actually 7.82mm
7.82/25.4 =.30787"
Tradeex is waiting on GP11. I'm sure other suppliers will also have some in the near future unless the ammo wholesaler bringing in the pallet(s) of GP11 has problems importing it. Just don't expect 7.62x39 surplus prices!
Reloading is simple with 30 caliber bullets. Cases made by Privi available from Tradeex. Can also use .284Win brass with neck expanded to 30 caliber and full length re sized in a 7.5x55 die. Dies like the Redding made for K31 chamber are too wide for the other 7.5x55 chambers such as the 96/11, m1911, K11.
I use regular 7.5x55 chamber dies in my K31s with no problems. and don't sort them as to which rifle they were fired from. Full length resizing at all times, just like you would for a semi-auto.
