Advice with breech plug fouling

Hi all,

Looking for advice on what I might be doing wrong. I was out to the range with my new Omega Z5, my load was 2 50g Pyrodex pellets, 250g Hornady SST sabot bullets and Remmington 209 Clean Muzzle Loader primers. I was following the T/C recomendations and cleaning between shots with a patch moistened with T/C #13 cleaner followed by a couple dry patchs.

I kept having two problems, I'm not sure how related they were, one was breech plug fouling and the second was slam fires. At one point the breech plug was so badly fouled I went through 5 primers and finally had to unload the gun. The plug was packed full of a black tarry sludge.

Any hints or advice would be helpfull!

Well....#1 breech plug fouling. I had to think about it for awhile, maybe you are putting to much cleaner on the patch and it is running down into the flash hole of the breech plug??? But the 209's have alot of umph so it should push right through the crud. Maybe try snapping a few 209's before you load next time, and run a nipple pick through the hole. Or try some regular 209 primers. Never ever had this problem with my Encore. Are you making sure that the black ring on the pyro pellets face down? #2 slam fires...does the firing pin protrude beyond the face of the breech when it is open? If it does stop using it ASAP and return it or get it fixed. Let us know how it goes, if would be interesting to see the cause of both of these problems. Good luck.
 
I've never heard of slam firing before, but your fouling problem sure sounds like too much #13. I know my gun performs best after one or two fouling shots so I don't solvent clean between shots, maybe just a brush. I've heard other shooters complain about pellets not burning off completely. The combination of unburned powder and too much solvent could be your problem. I shoot 90 grains of loose T7 and don't seem to have any residue problems.
 
My brother shoots the Z5 I have a Triumph, basically same breech plug. He has similar problems were I have not.

I always wet patch, dry patch 1 or 2 X's then fire one primer after each shot. I use the Winchesters Muzzleloading Primers. Never had a problem except for once when I failed to put the powder in.. DOH

Try to convince him to do it my way but he wont listen. Did I mention he was my younger brother.
 
Thanks for the advice folks...I'm going to give all of it a try. Hopefully today if the weather holds and I'll report back.

By the way I shouldn't have used the term "slam fire"...I meant a delayed fire. What was happening was, pull the trigger, then a second later ka-blaam!
 
i run a patch soaked with rubbing alchohol between shots and it cleans well and evaporates so you don't need to worry about cleaning stuff leaving sludge in the bore. you may want to try that.

That's called a hangfire. I have good luck just running a "spit" patch between shots. Literally a spit dampened patch. I may try the alcohol swab as well.
