I am looking to get a new semi .22, I have an old cooey model 64, but looking for something alittle newer, I am drawing on alll the wisdom here to tell me what to get in a good semi .22, I do like the Ruger 10/22 and the Remington 597. What I want to do is just a plinker, maybe a little hunting, but mostly killing paper. I want 3 things out of it, I want it semi (of course) I want high-cap mags, and I want to be able to put a red dot on it. What do you recomend?

10/22 sounds like it fits your description. If it was not for the high capacity mags i would reccomend a TC semi-auto to you (does anybody know if you can get high cap mags for the TC??)

I you want to go hicap your best bet is the 10/22, you can buy a wide variety of inexpensive aftermarket mags from 10-50 rounds.
Aside from the 10/22 you don't have much choice in rifles with readily available mags more than 10 rounds. Best bet for hicaps is a Gevarm with 20 round stick mag. They are getting expensive. You can also get Philippine-made Squires Bingham rifles with 15 round mags pretty cheap.

Nothing wrong with the choices mentioned but, the rule of thumb is how much do you want to spend?

Also before you buy...size up how easy is it to keep said rifle clean, maintained, and how it fits/feels at your shoulder.

Personaly I'd not overlook the older rifles, as IMHO they can keep up with the new ones, and not break the bank along the way.
